Viewers of The Chase were left stunned when a pair of contestants adopted a new strategy during the final chase, sparking debate over whether it was fair play. In the episode hosted by Bradley Walsh, teammates Sue and Ben advanced to the finals after fellow players Ben, 25, Reed, 77, and Johnny from Leicester were knocked out by Jenny "The Vixen" Ryan.

As the duo tackled the general knowledge round, Sue repeatedly answered with "I don't know," rather than "pass," giving Ben the chance to jump in with an answer - a move that triggered claims of rule-breaking from viewers.

Frustrated fans took to social media to voice their opinions, with @SomersetWasBlue tweeting: "Surely calling out 'Don't know' in #TheChase final amounts to 'wrong person answer'???? ", while @Mysteron_Voice pointed out: "Actually *saying* 'I don't know' seems a bit cheaty though and perhaps should technically count as a pass."

Other tweets showed agreement, with @AidyWhenImGood commenting: "I think it's cheating, surely you can't confer? ", and @dailowe remarking: "I'd always assumed that saying anything without buzzing counted as a wrong person wrong answer Seems folks never did it cos it never occurred to them."

Nevertheless, some defended the technique, such as one viewer who insisted: "Not cheating if it ain't against the rules," reports the Express.

Bradley lauded the pair's strategy, saying: "I'll tell you what was brilliant when Sue didn't know an answer you were saying 'I don't know,' and giving you (Ben) the chance to buzz in and pass or have a go at it, and I thought that was a brilliant tack tick. Really good."

Quiz genius Jenny Ryan also chimed in, praising their gameplay as a really admirable tactical performance.
