Charles Kushner, Donald Trump’s close ally and father to son-in-law Jared Kushner, has told friends the president’s behaviour was “beyond our control”, according to The New York Times.

The comments from Mr Kushner, who received a presidential pardon, were in response to a confidante who urged him in an email, obtained by the Times, to “get trump to be an American” instead of an *expletive*.

In the exchange, Kushner family friend Bob Sommer told the 66-year-old that he “texted Jared as well”, along with Ivanka Trump after she called the protestors “American patriots” in a Twitter post.

“Got it and beyond our control,” Mr Kushner replied, according to the Times.

Mr Sommer also told Mr Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, that he was “horrified I attended your wedding".

Ms Trump deleted the tweet referring to the mob storming the US Capitol as “American patriots”.

“American Patriots - any security breach or disrespect to our law enforcement is unacceptable,” she tweeted. “The violence must stop immediately. Please be peaceful.”

After deleting the tweet almost immediately, she clarified in a follow-up to CNN correspondent Kate Bennett that she was referring to peaceful protesters.

“Peaceful protest is patriotic. Violence is unacceptable and must be condemned in the strongest terms,” she said.

Meanwhile, Karlie Kloss, who is married to Jared Kushner’s brother Josh, said on Twitter she has tried to tell the Ivanka and Jared to accept the results of the election.

“Accepting the results of a legitimate democratic election is patriotic. Refusing to do so and inciting violence is anti-American,” she wrote on Twitter.

When told to tell her sister and brother in law, she responded: “I’ve tried”.

The question middle part of the exchange is private, but it was captured by journalist Yashar Ali, who posted the conversation.
