Chadwick Boseman wins a posthumous Golden Globe award
Chadwick Boseman has won a posthumous Golden Globe Award for his performance in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. Earning the trophy for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama, he is also the first Black posthumous winner and the fourth Black actor to win the category, Variety noted.
Boseman—beloved for roles such as T'Challa in Black Panther, Jackie Robinson in 42, and James Brown in Get On Up—passed away in August after a private, longtime battle with colon cancer. He was 43 years old.
The actor's wife, Taylor Simone Ledward, tearfully accepted the award on his behalf. "He would say something beautiful, something inspiring, something that would amplify the little voice inside of all of us that tells you you can, that tells you to keep going, that calls you back to what you are meant to be doing in this moment," she said. She ended with a heartfelt message to her husband: "Honey, you keep them coming."
In Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, a film adaptation of August Wilson's play, Boseman wowed as trumpeter Levee Green opposite Viola Davis, who took the titular role. "I felt like he was always living in the moment, squeezing out every bit of life," Davis, who is nominated for best actress, previously said of her co-star. "What it makes me think is, it's not the quantity, it’s the quality."
After his Golden Globe nomination was announced last month, Boseman was nominated for four Screen Actors Guild Awards, becoming the first person to ever do so in the same year. He's in the running in the male lead actor category for his role in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, the male supporting actor category for Spike Lee's Da 5 Bloods, and the ensemble category for both films.
Boseman's latest films are currently streaming on Netflix.
