Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman will be honoured in an upcoming Netflix documentary which celebrates the late actor's life and career.

Netflix has released the first trailer for the special, which will premiere on 17 April, and it promises to give us an insight into the way in which the actor, who sadly passed away in August 2020 from colon cancer, approached his craft.

The trailer begins with a voiceover by Boseman, who says: "I am an artist. People call me an actor. I wouldn't necessarily call myself an actor. I would call myself an artist."

Actors including Viola Davis, who starred with Boseman in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, and Denzel Washington, who produced that movie, will speak during the special about the star's "extraordinary commitment to his craft".

Described by Netflix as "an intimate look at the Oscar-nominated actor's artistry, and the acting process which informed his transformative performances", the special will also feature director Spike Lee, who directed Boseman in Da 5 Bloods, the actor's mentor Phylicia Rashād and more speaking about Boseman's career.

Davis, who played singer Ma Rainey opposite Boseman's musician Levee, praises Boseman's artistry in the trailer, saying: "You know you have to step up when you're in his presence. He's looking at your work and he's, like, really hyper-focused, on the craft, on the process. That's Chad."

Lee, meanwhile, describes Boseman as having "this weight, this aura" to his acting.

Boseman is currently in contention to posthumously win the Best Actor award at this year's Academy Awards for his role in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. He has already won Best Actor awards at the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the Critics' Choice Movie Awards for his performance in the movie.
