Celebrities and world leaders react to the Barcelona terror attack
On Thursday afternoon, a van veered onto Barcelona's famous Las Ramblas promenade and mowed down pedestrians in the busy area packed with locals and tourists. Thirteen people were killed and 100 were injured, 15 of them seriously.
Just hours later, the Catalan government said police in the popular seaside resort of Cambrils, south of Barcelona, were responding to a second terrorist attack early on Friday when they fatally shot five people near the town's seaside boardwalk.
As details of the incident continue to unfold, celebrities and political figures from Spain and the rest of the world have taken to social media to pay tribute to the victims and offer their support to those affected.
Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said his country is mourning in solidarity with the city of Barcelona and other cities in Europe that have been hit by deadly extremist attacks.
Spain's royal palace condemned the deadly van attack in Barcelona, calling the perpetrators "assassins, simply criminals who will not terrorize us". In a statement posted on Twitter, the palace said: "All of Spain is Barcelona. Las Ramblas will once again be for all."
Son unos asesinos, simplemente unos criminales que no nos van a aterrorizar. Toda España es Barcelona. Las Ramblas volverán a ser de todos.
