Celebrities including Hugh Grant and Jennifer Saunders join three million others to sign petition petition to cancel Brexit

Celebrities have rushed to join the three million (and counting) signatories of the 'Revoke Article 50 and remain in the EU' petition.

A slew of celebs have signed the petition, pledging their support for cancelling Brexit, including; Hugh Grant, Jennifer Saunders, Professor Brian Cox, Annie Lennox, actors Eddie Marsan and Andy Serkis and Armando Iannucci.

The petition, started by former college lecturer Margaret Anne Georgiadou, has proved hit a nerve with a huge proportion of the country. It has brought a huge amount of traffic to the UK Government and Parliament Petitions site, causing it to crash repeatedly.

"The rate of signing is the highest the site has ever had to deal with," the House of Commons' Petitions Committee said in a Twitter thread, "and we have had to make some changes to ensure the site remains stable and open for signatures and new petitions. Thanks for bearing with us."

Theresa May's response to the petition has been to rule out cancelling the Brexit countdown. She said that despite the EU offering a delay plan: "I do not believe that we should be revoking Article 50."

Hugh Grant tweeted: "I've signed. And it looks like every sane person in the country is signing too. National emergency. Revoke Article 50 and remain in the EU."

Jennifer Saunders has tweeted a number of updates to the Brexit petition, keeping her followers updated on whether the site is working or not.

Professor Brian Cox tweeted: "I've signed this petition to revoke A50 and deal with the consequences afterwards – referendum, election, whatever.

"I have no idea whether these things do any good but after May's astonishingly irresponsible speech this evening I'll give anything a go."

Annie Lennox tweeted: "I have just signed this petition to it's currently gaining 100k signatures an hour! Please join me, sign & share (the site keeps crashing under the traffic so stick with it)"

Eddie Marsan tweeted: "The right-wing Brexiteers believe that a free market utopia will rise from the ashes of destruction, left-wing Brexiteers say it will be a socialist utopia which will emerge. What both have in common is that they believe the destruction is a price worth paying."

Andy Serkis tweeted: "2 million and counting!! Petition: Revoke Article 50 and remain in the EU."

Armando Iannucci tweeted: "Now nearly two and a half million. Do sign"

The Brexit process continues, without anyone – famous or not – truly understanding what's going on.
