Carry On actress Amanda Barrie has paid tribute to Dame Barbara Windsor after the national treasure passed away on Thursday night.

Appearing on Friday's Good Morning Britain, the star told presenters Ben Shephard and Charlotte Hawkins that her friend was a "little tiny creature, fearless creature with all this talent".

Speaking about the last time she saw Barbara, at her 80th birthday party three years ago, Amanda said: "She was frail but she knew me. Because like everybody in our profession, we all go different ways after a job.

"June Brown was there, there were just a few of us that had known Barbara a long time. She knew me and she remembered the things that I would prefer to remember. Life does awful things and it’s not fair..."

Amanda also spoke of the bond Barbara had with her husband Scott, saying: "Wasn’t that wonderful? And that of all things, for Barbara to have that relationship and for him to be so wonderful, I was so glad.

"I would send my love to him and all those things that you say that don’t mean anything really, but there aren’t any words for it are there really, anyway?"

The former Coronation Street star remembered when she worked with Barbara at a London cabaret club in 1957 and her amazing talent.

"She was like a toy, she was this little person that just went ‘zoom’ up there on stage," she said.

Amanda explained how much she admired her friend: "I was in awe of Barbara, even though I am slightly older than her. She always felt much older than me because she was so superior."

On the Carry On films, in which they both appeared but never together, Amanda said: "Barbara sort of made the Carry On films. I was in [Carry On] Cleo before she started. They offered it to me and my agent said, ‘No, you have to go to the Bristol Old vic and do proper acting.’

"Well I think I should have just stuck with the Carry Ons because they did quite well. But mainly thanks to Barbara, when you think of Carry On, you think of Barbara."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV from 6am.
