Every year, one hair trend emerges that isn’t quite like the others – one that, in a sea of appealing highlights and long, sleek styles, feels a little more intimidating.
2021 is the year of The Shag: a texture-heavy cut comprising multiple layers that fall from the crown. Creative and striking, it’s probably your hairdresser’s dream brief, but it takes guts to wear in real life.
Now, Cara Delevingne has made The Shag feel a lot less scary, debuting her own take on the trend on Instagram last night. She captioned the post, “Blondes have more fun, but brunettes…”
And the choppy, heavily layered new cut wasn’t the only major change the model opted for: she’s also ditched her signature blonde hue in favour of a pale biscuit brown.
Delevingne trusted her cut to Mara Roszak, co-founder of West Hollywood hair salon Mare, with her colour coming from Jamie Levin. It seems Roszak is in high demand for her Shag styles right now: she’s the woman behind Kristen Wiig’s ice-white crop on the cover of Bazaar’s December digital cover shoot, and just last week chopped Kate Mara’s hair into a super-short ‘90s style bob with similarly textured layers.
So, why The Shag? It seems there’s a reason behind the revival of this decidedly retro cut. With tousled, messy texture key to the look, it plays perfectly into the low-maintenance predilections we’ve collectively developed since lockdown began. There’s no blow-drying, no heat-styling, and no excessive faffing required: simply shampoo, condition, and let your lengths air-dry for the best results.
