Captain Tom Moore appeared on Good Morning Britain today and was awarded a special Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Award.

The World War veteran, who has raised over £28 million for the NHS by walking the length of his garden 100 times before his 100th birthday on April 30, appeared live from his Milton Keynes home and said he couldn’t “be more proud to be in a position to receive it".

The host of the Pride of Britain Awards show, Carol Vorderman, appeared from her Bristol home and revealed they had received almost 70,000 nominations for Tom to be given a Pride of Britain Award. As she held the gong to the camera, she told Tom she’ll be handing it over to him later in the year when the awards’ ceremony takes place.

“We send it with the greatest love and greatest respect to you,” Carol told Tom.

On being a Pride of Britain Award winner, Tom said: “That is absolutely amazing. It’s very difficult for me to believe things like this. I know the Pride of Britain Award is a very important one, I can’t be more proud to be in a position to receive it from you.

"You are all so, so very kind. I thank all the people who nominated me for this award. I thank you very much because I am very, very humbled at receiving this magnificent award. Thank you all very, very much.”

He added: “I am completely taken aback by this because I know it’s an important, prestigious award that people get, thank you very, very much.”

An emotional video of a host of celebrities including Sir David Jason, Michael Sheen, Joanna Lumley, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Katherine Jenkins, Rita Ora and Bear Grylls all thanking Captain Tom then played on screen.

Sir David Jason said: “In the 1940s, you and your mates stepped up to the plate to help the country out and here you are again, you are a hero. And I salute you.”

After seeing the video, Captain Tom said: “I’m absolutely over-awed by it. Famous people doing such great things themselves, I’m completely taken aback by all those famous people on the screen there. Thank you very much, so kind of you all.”
