Canadiens' game against Bruins postponed amid COVID-19 spike

Amid concern over rapid increase of positive COVID-19 cases, the NHL has postponed the Montreal Canadiens' Saturday night matchup against the Boston Bruins in Montreal.

A make-up date has not yet been scheduled, but the NHL has announced that the Habs will resume action on Monday against the New York Islanders. On Thursday, as a precaution due to increased spread of the omicron COVID variant, the Canadiens played with no fans in the stands.

This also follows the release that the Bruins have a total of six players and one staff member in the league’s COVID protocol list as of Wednesday, including stars Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron. A total of 22 NHL players were added to the list as cases climb across the continent.

On Thursday, the league let all 32 clubs know that increased protocols for players and staff will be in place until at least Jan. 7, in an attempt to curb the surge of positive tests that has affected a great number of teams. Aside from positive tests, other teams such as the Calgary Flames and Carolina Hurricanes have had to postpone games just this week, with other clubs doing the same earlier this season.

The NHL is not the only league that is greatly affected by the increased spread of the new variant. The NFL and NBA currently have players in their own protocol lists. The former has teams taking new precautions, with the latter already having to postpone games earlier this month.
