Cameron Diaz has revealed why she left acting behind, after 20 years of being in the limelight.

Speaking to Gwyneth Paltrow on her In Goop Health show, the 47-year-old new mum said that she felt like she had to 'take back' her life, after realising she'd 'handed off parts of [her] life to all these other people,' over the years of making films.

'When you're making a movie, it's a perfect excuse, they own you,' she said, 'you're there 12 hours a day for months on end. You have no time for anything else.'

Having made major blockbusters like Charlie's Angels, There's Something About Mary and The Holiday, the former actress explained to Paltrow, that, as she's got older and her priorities shifted, she feels 'at peace' in her soul having left that part of her life behind. Mainly because it meant she's 'finally taking care' of herself.

'It's so intense to work at that level and be that public. There's a lot of energy coming at you at all times when you're really visible as an actor and doing press and putting yourself out there.I do get the overwhelming energy of the attention that's being put toward me.'

Last seen playing Miss Hannigan in the 2014 remake of Annie, Diaz has now turned her attentions to her new role of mum to baby daughter Raddix, whom she welcomed in December 2019 with husband Benji Madden.

She's also focusing on her passion for wellness, which saw her co-write The Longevity Book: The Science of Ageing, the Biology of Strength, and the Privilege of Time, back in 2016.
