'Tis the season for Christmas movie bingeing - and as Christmas is cancelled for many of us due to the pandemic - we need festive cheer and escapism more than ever.

The Holiday is a modern Christmas classic, and - spoiler alert! - one of the most joyous scenes features Cameron Diaz's Amanda suddenly deciding she wants to spend New Year with Jude Law's Graham in snowy Surrey, and jumping out of a black taxi to run back for that romantic reunion.

The actress has now revealed how challenging the scene was to shoot, and that she ended up running across "ten different fields" in heels and that stunning Valentino cashmere wool trench coat.

"I was running, like, seven miles a day in heels," Diaz told Vulture. "That whole scene took a week to shoot. That wasn't even in the script.

"She [Amanda] gets out of the car, and she runs back down the road to the cottage. But Nancy [Meyers - the director] had her already a half a mile away. It was not like she got to the edge of the driveway and decided she needed to go back. She was halfway to the freaking airport. She's almost to Heathrow, and she's like, 'top the car'. And for some reason ran back. I was like, 'Okay. Cool. Great.' Literally no idea."

Diaz continued: "They only used two shots, but we shot like ten shots of me running across ten different fields. And I'm wearing that Valentino cashmere wool trench coat, a turtleneck cashmere sweater and jeans, and my high-heeled boots. And we covered all the hillside with this fake snow, which was totally biodegradable."

Diaz joked that she was "so fit by the end of that week" after running "seven miles a day in those heels, through mud and hills".

"It was so hilarious," she added. "I think we shot it in over a week. And I just said to Nancy, ‘How did this go from four lines of description into a two-week scene of shooting?’ She was like, 'I don’t know'."

The romantic comedy follows Diaz's Amanda and Kate Winslet's Iris as they house swap over Christmas. While Iris end up in Amanda's luxury LA pad, Amanda ends up in Iris's picturesque cottage - before falling in love with Iris's brother Graham when he turns up drink one evening. Jack Black plays Winslet's love interest.

The Holiday is available to stream now on Netflix.
