Cameron Diaz made a guest appearance on longtime friend Drew Barrymore's show this week.

Appearing behind the big yellow desk for 'Drew's News' - a segment on The Drew Barrymore Show, which Barrymore hosts with Ross Mathews - the 49-year-old actor took the time to discuss pop culture's latest current affairs.

From new drinks appearing on the IHOP menu, through to deepfake videos relating to Tom Cruise and also the concept of 'hardballing', which has entered the dating lexicon, the Charlie's Angels alumni covered a wide range of topics.

Diaz introduced the idea of 'hardballing', giving a small explanation of what the term means: '[Hardballing is] when you treat your dating life like you're running a Fortune 500 company. And you're the CEO of that company and you make hard decisions and you make them fast. So anyone who doesn't meet your criteria has got to go.'

In other words, it's about discovering up front whether you and your date have the same values and intentions for the relationship. And if, after that conversation, you discover that one person is only available for sex, where the other one is searching for a soul mate, then you part ways without wasting any further time or energy. Supposedly, it's a way to circumvent any game playing, in favour of getting straight to the point.

Mathews appeared to balk at the idea, suggesting that a little mystery is important to romance, illustrating his thought with an anecdote about a friend who asks her dates whether they want children on their first encounter. To which Diaz replied: 'So [your friend] was a natural hardballer from he beginning. 'This is what I want. Are you in?' No.'

Diaz then appeared to put further stock in the idea, saying: '[It's about realising] you're not at [in the same place as me] but that's ok. That's ok. Because then you at least know. You at least know you're not in the same place. I think that's what dating is all about.'

To which Mathews agreed: 'If you find something that's not for you, don't be afraid to move on.'

And Diaz concluded 'And if the other person is not holding on to you, let go of them.'
