The Call The Midwife Christmas special isn't too far away now, and excitingly we know it will feature a familiar face in the form of a returning guest star who hasn't been in the show since series six.

The news about the upcoming festive episode has been shared by Laura Main, who plays Shelagh Turner in the hit BBC midwifery drama. She's revealed that her character's Christmas involves a reunion with Gloria Venables, played by Katie Lyons.

In series six, pregnant Shelagh and Gloria bonded when they were both hospitalised over fears of them miscarrying. Shelagh went on to give birth to baby Teddy, but Gloria tragically lost her baby.

Speaking about their history and how their relationship is developing in the Christmas special, Laura told Radio Times:

“Shelagh was in a bed alongside this character Gloria, played by brilliant Katie Lyons, who was completely devastating and heartbreaking in that episode, way back four years ago. But she’s now pregnant again and their paths cross and Shelagh is very much involved with that storyline."

After seven pregnancies, Gloria has never been so far along and is filled with anxiety.

“And what’s I think particularly nice about a long running series is, you know, this woman’s has been through a pretty hellish few years where she keeps miscarrying – which is obviously some women’s reality, so it is a lengthy passage of time… it’s something that you could do on this issue, and revisit. And she is brilliant. I’ve been doing a lot with Katie Lyons this Christmas," she said.

In a statement, the show revealed some details about the Christmas special:

"It is December 1965. Everyone at Nonnatus House is looking forward to traditional celebrations with all the trimmings, but nothing goes quite to plan. Sister Monica Joan is rushed to hospital and Trixie is incensed to receive a subscription to a Marriage Bureau as a Christmas gift. Meanwhile, a surprise reunion for Shelagh involves her in a deeply moving birth, and the Circus arrives in Poplar, bringing new friendships, new experiences, and an exciting adventure for Nurse Crane…."

The Call The Midwife Christmas special will air on Christmas Day on BBC One.
