A Call The Midwife legend has quit the BBC period drama after six year, it’s been reported. Miriam Margolyes will not be returning to the popular medical drama, insiders say. The actress, 83, joined the TV show playing the character Mother Mildred in 2018.

But, she hasn’t actually been seen on screen for a while, with her last appearing in the show in 2021. Speaking to the Daily Star's HotTV column , an insider source said: "Miriam loved being part of the show because she absolutely adores it."

She has no plans to ever return though, apparently, as they added: “But she is too busy to play Mother Mildred now so there are no plans for her to go back."

The Harry Potter star, 83, previously confessed that she was actually quite similar to her Call The Midwife character. In an interview with the Daily Mirror , she said: "There are considerable similarities. The directness Mother Mildred has is mine… I'm very like that. Playing her is what I call NAR - no acting required."

She also shared that she was a fan of the show’s wholesome storylines, saying: "It's about decent people doing decent things and that's rather rare on TV these days. It's wholesome but that doesn't mean it's dull - it's gripping."

The actress added: "But when you see a programme about caring, about love and people looking after each other, it feeds the soul."

It comes after the British-Australian actress, who recently returned to TV in her show, A New Australian Adventure, opened up about her personal life away from the cameras . Speaking on the TV show, she gushed with love for her partner, Heather Sutherland, who she has been together with for 54 years.

But, she shared with Gyles Bandreth on his Rosebud podcast that she had a secret romance in her teenage years before she met her long-term partner, revealing: “The first boyfriend was a beautiful young man… I don't know how I met him - I think I picked him up in the street. He was wheeling his daughter, a little baby."

She added that the man was married, saying: "He was married with a child. He was the most beautiful, loveliest man. I think if I found him earlier, I wouldn't be gay - I don't know."

Meanwhile, Call The Midwife has been confirmed to return for season 14 , as a post on social media revealed that the cast and crew had returned from their summer break to start production on the new season, as well as a Christmas special.
