Buckingham Palace Launches Its Own Gin Just In Time For Summer
Buckingham Palace has launched its official gin just in time for the summer. Royal Collection Trust, a department of the Royal Household, has today introduced a premium London dry gin for sale in its shops.
The spirit is made using 12 botanicals, several of which are from Buckingham Palace garden, including lemon verbena, hawthorn berries, bay leaves and mulberry leaves. The planting of Mulberry trees became popular during the reign of James I, and today the palace gardens is home to 40 different varieties.
The Buckingham Palace gin will be served at all official palace events. A statement from the palace advises pouring a measure of the gin into an ice-filled short tumbler before topping up with tonic and garnishing with a slice of lemon.
Described as 'the perfect summer thirst-quencher', the gin is priced at £40 and is available in the UK only. According to former royal chef Darren McGrady, the Queen is a seasoned gin fan. Every day before lunch, she enjoys a glass of the spirit with Dubonnet, a slice of lemon and a 'lot of ice'. Her cousin, Margaret Rhodes, says that the monarch will later have a dry gin martini with her lunch.
All profits from sales of the gin will go towards The Royal Collection Trust, a registered charity, which helps fund the care and conservation of the Royal Collection, considered one of the most important art collections in the world.
