From Runner's World

Last month, Brooks launched the Hyperion Elite running shoe - a running shoe built for speed, featuring a carbon fibre plate, an 8mm drop and (according to Brooks) a wider base than the carbon shoes of competitors. The shoes went on sale a few days ago and today, Brooks have announced the Hyperion Elite 2 - an updated version of the shoe that was worn by Des Linden at the U.S Olympic Team trials on 29th February.

According to Brooks, the Hyperion Elite 2, “combines the speed of its predecessor, with the cushion of Hyperion Tempo and Brook’s first DNA Flash nitrogen infused foam, which increases the durability of the shoe from 50 to 200 mile.”

What is the Hyperion Elite 2 designed for?

Like its predecessor, the Hyperion Elite 2 is designed for runners who want to run fast on race day. When launching the Hyperion Elite, the brand showcased research into deviation at the ankle, which occurs in the final miles of a marathon. Brooks claimed their shoe not only helped runners run faster, but prevented them from losing their form, due to the variable thickness of the carbon fibre plate.

In the Elite 2, Brooks claim to have taken these learnings and fine tuned things. The midsole is made from the brand’s DNA Flash foam - a nitrogen-infused foam that has more energy return than the DNA Zero foam used in the Elite. This is the same foam used in the brand’s Hyperion Tempo shoe, which does feel a lot softer underfoot than the harder foam in the Hyperion Elite.

The Elite 2 still has a carbon fibre plate and what looks to be a similar stretch woven upper to that used in the Hyperion Elite. Brooks have revealed the shoe will weigh 195g (unisex) and have a midsole drop of 8mm.

The Hyperion Elite 2 will be brought to market in late April in the US only (potentially to comply with new WA regulations and allow athletes to wear the shoe at the Tokyo Olympics). The shoe will be sold worldwide from 1 September 2020.

“Since Desiree Linden won the 2018 Boston Marathon in a prototype of the Hyperion Elite, we have been improving on this high-end shoe. Our team of designers has built this new racing shoe and it is our response to feedback from our athletes for whom we have combined the best of both worlds: the qualities of our racing and training shoes Hyperion Elite and Tempo. This has allowed us to bring the latest innovations to the running community faster,” says Hugo Chouissa, Brooks Footwear Merchandiser EMEA.
