A British woman has been impaled by an umbrella while on a beach in the US.

Margaret Reynolds, from London, was at Seaside Heights in New Jersey when part of the beach umbrella went through her leg.

The 67-year-old was pierced through her right ankle by the umbrella.

Part of the aluminium umbrella was driven completely through due to the “force of the wind”, the Asbury Park Press reported.

Borough Police Chief Tommy Boyd said fire crews had to use a bolt cutter on the umbrella to free her, and then put her in an ambulance.

Ms Reynolds was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. There has been no update on her condition.

Emergency workers were called to the beach at about 4.30pm on Monday.

Seaside Heights Assistant Fire Chief William Rumbolo cut the stretcher, the portion of the umbrella that connects to the frame, in order to free Ms Reynolds.

Police said they did not know exactly how the incident occurred.
