Bridget Jones' Sally Phillips says nobody heard Renée Zellweger's real voice until filming had ended
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Bridget Jones Diary Sally Phillips aka Shazzer joined Cosmopolitan UK for a Bridget-themed game of Trials & Trivialations, where she answered trivia questions about the film.
She scored a stunning 9/12, which clearly calls for a bowl of blue soup in celebration.
If you can believe it, this month marks the 20th anniversary of Bridget Jones's Diary. As soon as it hit cinemas back in 2001 the film became instantly and eternally iconic. Now, everyone knows the line "bop bop Bridget," and we all understand the significance of blue soup. And even the cast can't help but know the film top to bottom, as we discovered when we caught up with Sally Phillips aka Shazzer for a Bridget-themed game of Trials & Trivialations.
But it's not just us looking for an excuse to celebrate, streaming service NOW are also getting in on the 20th anniversary action with the launch of their ultimate Bridget Mini-Break at the same hotel where Bridget and Daniel enjoyed their hilarious getaway. Chardonnay and giant pants included (seriously).
During the game Sally not only proved that she knows her stuff, but she also revealed some pretty wild details about what Renée did to prep for the role and when the rest of the cast first heard her real voice.
According to Sally Renée actually went undercover at a publishing house for three weeks in order to prepare for her role as Bridget, who works at a publishing company in London.
"The amazing thing about that is that there's probably nowhere in the world Renée could go now without being recognised, but she came to the UK and no one had any idea who she was. So she very effectively went undercover at this publishing firm and not one person thought that she was a movie star."
Sally also detailed how Renée kept a diary while she was working at the publisher, in order to better prepare herself for the role.
"She wrote the sentence 'if a tree falls in the forest but no one knows it's fallen, has it fallen? If I'm a movie star but no one knows I'm a movie star, am I really a movie star?"
Sally also spoke about the first time she heard Renée's real voice, explaining that neither she nor Hugh Grant had heard her speaking her native Texan until filming had finished on the movie.
"That's when I first heard her talking in Texan [the wrap party], and it was a real shock. It was a bit of a surprise because I had made good friends with Bridget it turned out - not with Renée. Because, what is not to love about a British woman charging around saying 'f*** 'em' with a giant Toblerone under each arm."
