This article contains spoilers for Bridgerton season 1.

Nicola Coughlan's Penelope Featherington in Bridgerton was known for wearing gowns so yellow that they were once described by an admiring suitor as the "colour of double Gloucester cheese".

Coughlan has now revealed that the yellow gowns have been banished as she shared a behind-the-scenes photo of herself in character wearing a beautiful silver and gold gown.

The Derry Girls actress posted the picture on Instagram, thanking her makeup artist and wardrobe assistant, and adding the caption: "Team Pen."

Fans were admiring Pen's style evolution and her more muted gown, with one commenting: "OMG, bye bye yellow!"

The season finale saw Penelope being unveiled as gossip columnist Lady Whistledown, but her friends and family are none the wiser about her secret alias.

Coughlan had included pen emojis in her caption, and one viewer worked out that the series had planted a huge clue to Lady W's identity with Penelope's name. 'Penelope Featherington' can be shortened to 'feather pen', and we all know that Lady Whistledown writes her column with a feather quill pen.

"I mean I know that we already know that she's Lady Whistledown but her name was the clue all along!!!!!???!!!!" the Bridgerton fan wrote.

Filming for season two is currently underway, and we know that the second book in Julia Quinn's best-selling series, The Duke and I, has been adapted, shifting the focus onto "reformed rake" Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and his quest to find a wife.

After meeting his wife-to-be, her older sister, Kate - described as "the most meddlesome woman ever to grace a London ballroom" - is determined to put a stop to the betrothal, but unwittingly becomes the object of Anthony's desire.

Netflix recently confirmed that Simone Ashley, best known for playing Olivia in Netflix's Sex Education, has been cast as Miss Kate.

Meanwhile, the Regency drama was recently crowned Netflix's most popular series to date, having been enjoyed by 82 million households.

Bridgerton season 2 is expected to arrive in 2022.
