Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan has revealed that she once auditioned for another Netflix hit – Stranger Things.

She auditioned for the show for its third season, to play the role of Robin Buckley, Steve's friend who works with him at the ice-cream store (the part that eventually went to Maya Hawke).

"I auditioned to play Robin, Maya Hawke got it," Coughlan told BuzzFeed. "She was far better than I ever would have been."

She went on to offer other actors some really helpful advice when it comes to not getting all the parts you audition for.

"It's a good lesson to actors: Watch the stuff you didn't get because you'll totally understand how it's not personal."

She added: "You're just right for some things, and you're not right for other things," she continued.

The actress, who plays Penelope Featherington in Bridgerton, recently opened up about her own love story in the show.

"I think because when I signed on to this show, because it's based on the books, I knew that her love story was coming at some point, but it felt like a moment in the very distant future. And I know her love interest already, it's Colin Bridgerton."

Coughlan recalled when she and her co-star Luke Thompson, who plays Colin, would previously "joke" about it, but it has become more terrifying as time passes.

"Luke and I, we used to joke about it all the time, and then it becomes progressively less funny and more intimidating as time goes on [...] I'm really interested in how it's gonna play out because she's quite modern a lot of ways in that she, she's a businesswoman. She's super serious about her career, but she also wants the love, she also wants the marriage."

Talking of the future scenes between Penelope and Colin, Coughlan has decided to approach producers to ask for a tamer version to be filmed.

"I think I'm genuinely – and I'm not kidding – going to ask Shondaland for a special family-friendly cut. Because I just think it's embarrassing enough watching the scenes that I am not in there like that."

Bridgerton season 1 is now available to watch on Netflix. Season 2 will premiere on March 25. Secret Cinema with Fever Present Bridgerton is open now in Wembley. To purchase tickets, head here.
