Bridgerton has been renewed for seasons three and four, following the success of its debut series which first aired in December last year. The news shows Netflix's confidence in the show's enduring popularity.

In January, Bridgerton was named the streaming service's most-watched series of all time. In its first 28 days of release, the Regency drama was viewed by 82 households, far exceeding the 63 million that Netflix predicted. That same month, it was announced that the romance and decadent costumes would continue for a second season, now in production.

The series, based on Julia Quinn’s best-selling series of novels, was adapted by US producer Shona Rhimes, who has been praised for her colour blind casting decision. "From the first time I read Julia Quinn’s delicious Bridgerton series, I knew these were stories that would captivate a viewing audience," said Rhimes. "But the evolution of this adaptation would not be a success without the many significant contributions of the entire Shondaland team. This two-season pick-up is a strong vote of confidence in our work and I feel incredibly grateful to have partners as collaborative and creative as Netflix."

Set in Regency London, Bridgerton captivated audiences in lockdown this Christmas, offering entertaining escapism from the grim pandemic-related headlines. It even made a dent on our shopping choices - according to social shopping service Like To Know It, searches for corsets increased by 1,000 per cent since Bridgerton hit our screens.

Netflix's global TV vice president Bela Bajaria says viewers can look forward to equally compelling storylines from the show in the future.

"Bridgerton swept us off our feet. The creative team, led by Shonda, knew the material and delivered a beautiful, emotional, romantic drama for our members," says Bajaria. "They have some exciting plans for the future, and we think audiences will continue to swoon for this show. We’re planning to be in the Bridgerton business for a long time to come.”
