Bridgerton is Netflix's most-watched show of all time, the streaming service has confirmed. In its first 28 days of release, the Regency drama has been viewed by 82 households, far exceeding the 63 million that Netflix predicted.

It reached the number one spot in 82 countries, including the US, UK, India, France and Brazil. Netflix says it entered the top 10 most watched shows in every country that the platform exists in, except Japan. Shonda Rhimes' show has been widely praised for its colour-blind casting, costumes and entertaining storylines. It has been been renewed for a second season.

Jinny Howe, vice-president of original series at Netflix, said Bridgerton "defies tradition, and demonstrates that period dramas are not limited in scope or audience".

"The empowerment of people of colour and women made Bridgerton feel accessible and contemporary, resonating with audiences all around the world," she wrote in a blog post.

Netflix measures a view as any piece of content watched for at least two minutes. The prior series record was held by fantasy-drama The Witcher, which attracted 76 million household views in the first 28 days of release. The all-time high for any Netflix original is claimed by Chris Hemsworth-led action movie Extraction. The company said 99 million member accounts watched the film within 28 days of its release.
