WNBA legend Breanna Stewart made her SI Swimsuit debut alongside fellow powerful female athletes in 2022. The New York Liberty forward, who is a four-time NCAA champion and was named Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA tournament for four separate seasons, was captured in St. Thomas. Photographer Laretta Houston photographed Sue Bird, DiDi Richards, Nneka Ogwumike and Te’a Cooper that year for a truly iconic and fierce magazine issue.
The two-time MVP, who shares her daughter Ruby and son Theo with her wife Marta Xargay, is passionate about social justice reform and human rights, and she constantly uses her platform to advocate for causes.
The 2020 Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year and two-time Olympic gold-medalist is also determined to bring viewership to women’s sports.
“Media coverage is so important for women in sports. We’re continuing to trend in the right direction [in women’s basketball] but we need to be seen and heard and be highlighted on a daily,” the 29-year-old said. “I think that’s what we’re missing, the next step where people are like constantly seeing us all the time in the spotlight, out of the spotlight, what are we doing. It’s continuing to grow, even from when I came in the WNBA in 2016. We have a long way to go, but it’s definitely positive news.”
