We’ve all tried to breakdance at one point, surely? But unless you can actually do it, you look really stupid. And it hurts.
So this is where ‘Breakletics’ comes in. It’s basically a beginners breakdance class for adults, that combines functional training and core work – so not only do you look like a totally rad b-boy (er, ish)… you’re burning a great big pile of calories too. Hurrah!
The 45-minute class at Gymbox starts with learning two basic elements of breakdancing. Toprock – moves performed from a standing position, and downrock – which is basically floor work. Both involve lots of squatting and planking, and the floor stuff definitely works the abs too. Plus the music is excellent.
The instructor is patient and encouraging and won’t laugh if you can’t do it, promise. But you will be able to because the steps are very basic and there is probably a bit more emphasis on the workout side of things rather than practising for some kind of street competition.
Classes are on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at various Gymbox branches. I’d give this class 3 out of 5 in terms of difficulty and great for toning, improving flexibility, coordination and getting a serious sweat on.
