Boris Johnson has enlisted the help of a celebrity personal trainer to get fit after he admitted he needed to lose weight.

Harry Jameson, who describes himself as an "elite performance coach" who has previously worked with Love Island presenter Laura Whitmore, former England footballer Wayne Bridge and boxer Oriance Lungu, was seen running with the Prime Minister on Wednesday:

A Number 10 source confirmed Mr Johnson “has engaged a personal trainer”.

“I can confirm it is Harry Jameson,” he said.

“It's because he is really serious about getting fit, as anyone who has seen him over the past couple of months knows. Boris is raring to go."

It comes days after it was rumoured that Mr Johnson would be stepping down from his role as Prime Minister in six months as he struggled to get his full health back following his battle with coronavirus.

Mr Johnson spoke publicly last month about his wish to get into better shape, and admitted that being overweight probably played a factor in the severity of his illness.

A report in July by Public Health England (PHE) found that being overweight or obese can dramatically increase the risk of hospital admission and death from coronavirus.

“I've always wanted to lose weight for ages and, I think like many people, I struggle with my weight - I go up and down,” Mr Johnson said. "But since I recovered from coronavirus, I've been steadily building up my fitness.”

He added that he was “more than a stone down” after the virus but acknowledged that at 5ft 10in he was “way overweight” when he was ill.

The Telegraph contacted Mr Jameson's agent for comment.
