What Boris's new haircut tells us about his approach to grooming

When Boris Johnson announced plans for ‘super Saturday’ two weeks ago, he said he was looking forward to a pint in the pub and a haircut, so went to a barbers on Saturday followed by a drink at a local pub on Saturday evening. His new haircut was on show yesterday as he visited a construction site in Goole in East Yorkshire. Although it wasn’t confirmed where the Prime Minister had his hair cut, his official spokesman said: “I don’t know that detail and don’t plan to ask such questions but the PM has definitely had a haircut and he also went for a drink on Saturday evening.”

Boris joined the thousands of people booking in for haircuts on the first day of reopening and trimmed and tidied up his signature shock of unruly blonde hair. “It’s a smart haircut, mature and professional, far from the tousled trademark look we're used to but it suits the Prime Minister,” says Stefan Avanzato, a leading barber based in London. “His new look still boasts the usual Boris style; full of character, side sweep over the forehead with various levels and grading to add volume.”

Avanzato doesn’t think Boris uses any hair products, but with his generous head of hair he could “certainly benefit from using a couple of professional products like sea salt spray for a natural look or wax for more control,” he says. Boris' hair has become very much a part of his identity, and certainly shows no signs of being high maintenance. In an interview with the Evening Standard last week, the Prime Minister said he was “starting to get dreadlocks at the back”.

“Boris has a busy daily schedule no doubt so his look needs to be easy to maintain and fit into his morning routine,” Avanzato continues. “So he has remained true to himself even after going shorter, with a functional haircut. I'd relish the opportunity to enhance this if he were in my chair.” Whether he'd be up for an enhancement is a different question altogether: the Prime Minister has had variations of the same haircut for years - with no obvious 'style' and incredibly low-maintenance - so it's unlikely he'll ever be up for any drastic changes in the future.
