Surely the point of a ‘Women of the Year’ awards is that all of the recipients of said awards are, well, women. Apparently that’s not the case, though.

U2 frontman Bono has scored one of Glamour magazine’s coveted awards – leaving people a little confused.

The singer was awarded an accolade for his work with the ‘Poverty is Sexist’ initiative, designed to give vulnerable women access to education, food and clean water. But while no one can dispute how deserving he is, he’s still not female. Surely there are plenty of equally deserving women who could have scooped the lauded title?

“I’m sure I don’t deserve it,” Bono said, when accepting the award. “But I’m grateful for this award as a chance to say the battle for gender equality can’t be won unless men lead it along with women. We’re largely responsible for the problem, so we have to be involved in the solutions.”

The magazine tweeted that the singer’s win marked the first ever ‘Man of the Year’ awards, but that just seemed to infuriate people follow the evening’s proceedings on Twitter even more.

Glamour’s editor-in-chief Cindi Leive addressed the backlash, releasing a statement that read: “We’ve talked for years about whether to honor a man at Women of the Year and we’ve always kind of put the kibosh on it.

You know, men get a lot of awards and aren’t exactly hurting in the celebration and honors department. But it started to seem that that might be an outdated way of looking at things, and there are so many men who really are doing wonderful things for women these days. Some men get it and Bono is one of those guys.”
