Blue Jays activate Cavan Biggio for final homestand of regular season

TORONTO — Cavan Biggio will be available for Tuesday's game against the New York Yankees, the Toronto Blue Jays announced.

Biggio was activated from the injured list after dealing with back tightness for nearly two months. He was first placed on the 10-day IL on Aug. 3.

Prior to his injury, Biggio was slashing a disappointing .215/.316/.350 with seven homers and 26 RBI over 77 games this season.

"I feel pretty good," said Biggio, who had been on a triple-A rehab assignment since Aug. 12. "If you want to look at a silver lining, I'm glad I went through it the way I did and I was able to learn a lot about myself and about my body. I'm going to use that later on in my career."

Biggio slashed .227 in Buffalo in September, with two homers, 10 RBI, 10 walks and 15 strikeouts.

The 26-year-old has mostly played third base in the majors this season, but he's capable of slotting all over the diamond, giving manager Charlie Montoyo some valuable versatility. As Lourdes Gurriel Jr. remains out of the defensive lineup dealing with a hand injury, Biggio is expected to see more time in the outfield.

Gurriel Jr. is making his return on Tuesday in the DH spot after being sidelined since Sept. 24, when teammate Randal Grichuk stepped on his hand during a defensive play.

In a corresponding move, the Blue Jays optioned reliever Ryan Borucki to triple-A Buffalo ahead of the Yankees series.

Though he's available, Biggio is not in the lineup to start the series against the Yankees.

"I'm happy he's here today. He was having good at-bats in triple-A," said Montoyo. "And, you know, he's part of this. So, it's pretty cool that he's here for this."

Toronto is currently two games back of a wild-card spot and begins a crucial homestand against the Yankees and Baltimore Orioles in a final push to make the postseason.

"There's a lot at stake going here, there's going to be a lot of people here and it's going to be a lot of excitement and we're all looking forward to it," said Biggio. "But we gotta stay within the moment and do what we gotta do. I'm here to do whatever that is in my individual aspect."

With an increased Rogers Centre capacity of 30,000 fans from now until the end of the season, Toronto is gearing up for a meaningful final week.

"It means everything to me," said Biggio of being back for the final homestand. "The past couple of months, it's been tough. Whether I was here rehabbing, watching the games from the dugout, or if I was watching from my bed in my hotel room in Buffalo. You could see the energy and the amount of fun that everyone was having. There was a little bit of FOMO in there. But this means a lot, just to be here and be part of the team again."

The Blue Jays also announced on Tuesday that left-handed starter Hyun-Jin Ryu was activated from the 10-day injured list and will take the mound to open the series against New York.
