Honeymoon Hair: How To Avoid That Post-Wedding Monica Geller Frizz

Just because the big day is over, don't forget about your luscious locks!

Wedding stress is enough to send even the calmest of women into bridal meltdown – and that’s before they’ve even considered their health and beauty regimes (which, whether you like it or not, you’ll start to really care about, trust us!).

So by the time your toes hit the sand on honeymoon and you finally exhale, the last thing you’ll want to think about is whether you’ve packed the Morroccan Oil hair treatment masks that you’ve been using religiously in the wedding run-up.

And while the most important day is over (*sniffle*), the dreaded honeymoon frizz – aka Monica from Friends – is the forgotten enemy that awaits in sunnier climates.

Anna Baker, Head of Bridal at Errol Douglas Salon, told us: “Sunny destinations (humid or dry heat) are frizz zones if hair isn’t prepared and protected.

"Humidity is hair’s worst enemy, either causing frizz or deflating fine hair. But there is help at hand with great tricks and products on the market to save you from the Monica look.”

Anna’s top tips:

1. Invest in a good quality shampoo and conditioner, don’t rely on the hotel’s choice.
As easy as it is not to pack that extra load of hair treatments, frizz fighting starts with the wash: cool water with potent hydrating ingredients (Moroccanoil Moisture Repair Shampoo and Conditioner are great).

2. If you have coarse or naturally curly/wavy hair, work a smoothing balm throughout the lengths and ends after washing.
This should be a heavy enough product to coat the hair and absorb into it when the heat hits, preventing frizz.

3. Plaiting the hair and letting it dry naturally is a great way to shape your waves whilst keeping the hair neat, then just loosen out for your evening style.
Fishtail (braid UNDER and OVER) will deliver a great vintage wave in the evening.

4. Use a UV filtered mask.
Dry heat (think honeymoon destinations far from the equator) can leave hair looking particularly parched and frazzled, so smooth over a good quality conditioning mask with UV filters, and use the texture consistency to comb hair back into and ponytail and twist into sleek elegant bun, that’s fuss free. This will massively nourish the hair’s condition.

5. To wear hair down in the evening, use a lightweight setting spray all the way through freshly-washed hair and blow dry upside down with a paddle brush lifting hair up and out, creating volume and lightness throughout.
Calm any wayward ends with a glossy serum, which helps control static and gives a polished healthy appearance against the dry heat.

Top product:
Anna recommends the Nano Keratin Complex Blow Dry Treatment before you depart.

She says: “It’s not a chemical straightener, but it’s an intensive smoothing treatment that infuses keratin throughout the hair and increases manageability whilst managing frizz and significantly reducing effort too.”

And if you want your pre-wedding colour to last for your office return, covering it from the sun is a must - especially if you’ve gone for reds or you’ve previously bleached your hair.

Jasmin Allen, Senior Colour Master, tells us: "Protection is crucial!  Cover with a hat OR use a potent hair product with a UV protectant otherwise there’s a risk that the colour will be diluted by the sun."
