‘Bleeding’ vegan burger pioneers Moving Mountains to launch meat-free hot dog in London

The team behind the world’s first 'bleeding' vegan burger are set to launch a meatless hot dog at a diner in London next month.

Moving Mountains will premiere the “world’s first plant-based foot long” at Unity Diner, a not-for-profit vegan restaurant in Shoreditch, on May 10. The restaurant will also run a half-price launch offer on the dog, which will cost curious diners just £6 (usual price £12) for the first weekend.

The Frankfurter-style sausage is 10 inches long, and made using sunflower seeds as its main constituent, with carrots, onion, paprika and coconut oil. The hot dog is gluten free, claims to be vitamin-rich, and Moving Mountains founder Simeon Van der Molen says that the sausage is of “an identical taste and texture” to its pork counterpart.

“Following the resounding success of the UK’s first meatless bleeding burger, our second innovative launch is set to make hot dogs desirable again, giving them a long deserved revamp,” said Van der Molen. “Our latest food tech innovation proves that you don’t need a pig to make a dog.”

The hot dog will be served at Unity diner in a warm bun, with classic accompaniments including caramelised onions, mustard and ketchup. Moving Mountains also plan to sell the product in supermarkets.

British food tech company Moving Mountains made headlines last year when it created a vegan burger which “bleeds” beetroot juice, mimicking the qualities of a rare beef burger. The dish went on to be included on the menu at pioneering and popular London vegetarian restaurant Mildreds.

The Meatless Moving Mountains Hot Dog will be available from May 10 at Unity Diner, 5 Hoxton Market, Shoreditch, N1 6HG. Diners can get 50 per cent off the regular price of hot dog at Unity Diner from May 10-12. For more information, visit movingmountainsfoods.com
