Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively have donated $1 million to food bank organisations across the US and Canada.

The couple has pledged to give the sizeable figure to hunger relief organisation Feed America, which distributes supplies and money to a nationwide network of more than 200 food banks, as well as Food Banks Canada, which works with numerous food agencies and 500 food banks.

“Though we must be distancing ourselves to protect those who don’t have the opportunity to self quarantine, we can stay connected," wrote Lively on Instagram. "Remember the lonely and isolated. Facetime, Skype, make a video. Remember the love that can travel through all this."

"Communities are stepping up - shopping for the elderly, making lunches for children," she continued. "We can all do something for one another, even if that's simply staying at home."

Reynolds posted a simpler message on Twitter: "I think we can all agree, Covid-19 is an asshole. If you can help, visit, and/or"

Panic-buying has resulted in fewer donations to already stretched food banks, with one Coventry organisation saying supplies have "never been so low". The North Paddington Food bank reported a 25% decrease in donations, while one food bank in Kirkcaldy said supplies had fallen by a third. UK food banks gave out more than 1.6 million parcels last year, based on figures for the Trussell Trust.
