A true wardrobe hero, it's workwear that's taken a walk on the wild side
Collectors go mad for vintage denim. Mad enough to blindly explore abandoned mines in the hope of finding old workwear that was previously supplied to the miners by brands like Levi’s, Lee and Wrangler. If found, the items would often be in a fairly wearable condition, preserved by the rocks and rubble, but also because the denim they were made from was built to withstand a thermonuclear blast. Come the End Days, the only thing left will be cockroaches and Levi's 501s.
Not that you'll be wearing yours down a mine. These days the denim jacket is a versatile essential in any man’s wardrobe. Chuck it on for a windy dog walk or supermarket trip, or style it up with a shirt and a pair of tailored trousers. You can layer one under your overcoat in the winter. A sherpa-collared DJ will keep you warm in spring and autumn chills. When summer finally comes around, a denim jacket is perfect worn open with a T shirt or Cuban collar shirt. It (literally) has you covered in all seasons.
But hey, you probably knew all that, because you've probably had one sitting in your wardrobe for years. Which is why we're here to pitch something a bit different: the black denim jacket. Yes, blue denim was made a countercultural icon courtesy of Jack Nicholson, Martin Sheen or basically any good looking, rebel-ish movie character in the late Seventies and early Eighties. But in the real world, its black counterpart was on the backs of real bikers and real punks. Which gives it an outsider energy tat blue denim can never quite match. Here are the best black denim jackets for channelling it.
