Alongside her incredible vocals, statement fashion choices and countless awards, Billie Eilish’s hair has always been a talking point.

Not long after arriving on the music scene, Billie quickly became known for her original looks, which included neon green roots.

The look became a signature part of the singer’s aesthetic – and so, you can imagine how shocked we all were when she debuted platinum blonde hair earlier this year in March. Then, she chopped it off into a bob and got a full fringe, too.

At first, the hair transformation seemed like a trend-led choice. Even when Billie appeared on Ellen DeGeneres’ show in May, she hinted that it was an impulse decision after seeing a fan edit online.

“It was me with whatever hair colour I had, and they just edited blonde hair on me, and I was like, ‘It’s so sick, I want it,’” she explained.

But now, the singer has revealed that there was actually a much deeper – and quite sad reason – behind her decision to go blonde.

Speaking about her acid green look, she told Elle magazine: “I couldn’t go anywhere with that hair because it was so obviously me. I wanted anonymity.”

After dyeing her hair blonde, Billie quickly realised the freedom that came with it. She said: “I went to a park with a friend, and I was like, ‘No, I can’t take off my hood!’ I was terrified of the paparazzi and these stalkers I’ve had.

“But my friend was like, ‘Don’t worry: you’re okay. Nothing’s gonna happen.’ And I took my hood off, and I felt like a new person.”

Yep, heartbreakingly, Billie was scared her hair colour would be the cause of attracting unwanted attention.

As for anybody that misses her neon green hair, Billie stressed she hasn’t changed and the new hair colour is also just part of switching up her look as an artist.

“I’ve had different-coloured hair and vibes for everything I’ve ever done,” she said. “I wanted this album to have its own thing.”

She added: “The other day, I posted a video from when I had green hair, and I saw people go, ‘I miss this Billie, the green-haired Billie.

“I’m still the same person. I’m not just different Barbies with different heads.”

Well, Billie, we can’t wait to see what you do next.
