At last weekend’s Grammy awards, it was beauty business as usual for Billie Eilish: inch-long printed nails (to match her Gucci shirt, bucket hat and face mask trio) and low-key make-up to leave all focus on that trademark two-tone hair colour
But last night, Eilish shed the signature slime-green roots, unveiling a surprisingly pedestrian new look. The star took to Instagram to reveal a new warm-blonde hue, complete with a very on-point '70s-style shag cut, centre-parted fringe and all.
The new look might be (comparatively) low key, but it drew in plenty of admiration, with everyone from Yara Shahidi to Sara Sampaio commenting approvingly. In fact, the post proved so popular it broke the Instagram record for gaining 1 million likes in just six minutes, according to the BBC. It’s now one of the 10 most-liked posts of all time. Even @Instagram itself felt compelled to comment, writing "pretty legendary if you ask me".
Eilish has long been defying the standard A-list hair transformation timeline, remaining loyal to her neon-green roots and jet-black ends since 2019. However, the decision to go blonde was likely not a rash one: the musician promised “a new era” while speaking during an Instagram Live broadcast back in December, revealing her plans for a total transformation after the release of her documentary, The World’s A Little Blurry, which is now available to watch on Apple TV.
