Sharp writing, stellar photography, handsome design, useful information and nice paper are what defines The Big Watch Book, the annual celebration of men’s watches, brought to you by the people behind Esquire (that’s us). Plus, of course: watches. Lots and lots of watches: 176 of them in the new issue, to be exact. We know because we’ve counted (we’ve had some extra time on our hands this year, TBH). What it doesn’t have: earnest interviews with Swiss CEOs, reports from trade fairs in the Far East and guides to the inner workings of wristwatches you need a MA in Watch Speak to understand. If you’re into your gear trains and escapements then good luck to you, sir – we will happily point you in the direction of other watch publications that do an excellent job of doing these deep dives, way better than we can.

If, on the other hand, you like watches because they provide joy and distraction in the same way records or cars or guitars or clothes do, then pull up a stool. Because let’s be honest, no one really needs a watch. Certainly no one needs more than one watch. But reason and logic are not the same thing as passion and enjoyment and it’s the latter we hope to bring to The Big Watch Book every year.

So, you’re as likely to find us devoting space to the story of the first digital watch as you are about the rarest Rolex Daytona. Or rummaging through James Bond’s exploding watch collection before meeting the world’s foremost Patek Philippe authority. We are as at home discussing the fastest lap time on Germany’s notorious Nürburgring as we are celebrating the history of luminosity in Italian Navy diving watches (40 years old this year, who knew?).

The Big Watch Book can do all this, and more. In fact, the 2020 issue does. We hope it serves as inspiration, or provocation – or just diversion.

Failing that, there are watches. Lots and lots of watches.
