There are certain things you can expect a mega fan to do. You’ll likely know every teensy detail about the person you’re fan-ing over, you might spend the best part of your salary on tickets to see them, heck you might even get up at ridiculous ‘O’ clock to stand outside the TV studio where you know they’re going to be filming (totally me circa 1992 trying to glimpse Take That outside the Going Live studios!) So far, so harmless. But this weekend Beyoncé super fans have taken their love for Queen Bey to a scary new level.

On Saturday night Beyoncé was performing at Tidal X: 1015 show at the Barclays Centre in New York, absolutely killing it as per. But while she was on stage doing her thang, during her rendition of Haunted, her earring got caught and ripped out causing her ear to start bleeding. Ouchy! Being the absolute boss that she is, Beyoncé wasn’t about to let a little bit of blood stop her performing to the masses because, Beyoncé.

But while most of her fans took to social media to give props to the mega star for carrying on regardless, some members of the Bey Hive took things a worrying stage further by self-harming in solidarity. Under the #CutForBeyoncé and #BleedForBeyonce hashtags fans shared pictures of their own bloody cuts.

“If the queen bleeds the hive must unify and leak our blood to restore her spirits. Beyhive we must #CutForBeyonce,” one woman wrote alongside a picture of a painful looking cut.

“All for you Queen #CutForBeyonce #BleedForBeyonce” added another next to a snapshot of a cut ear.

Of course there’s no way of knowing if the cuts are real or whether some are the work of Internet Trolls, but the trend does seem to hint at a much darker side of fandom. And as some social media users pointed out, self-harm is a serious issue and shouldn’t be turned into some sort of joke.

“Really… this is like making fun of self harming. It’s not like that at all. Ugh I’m infuriated w/ ppl’s ignorance,” wrote one angry woman.

Worryingly, this isn’t the first time these type of hashtags have appeared. Back in 2013, and then again in 2014 the hashtags started doing the social media rounds after Bey fans felt aggrieved their gal didn’t win the award she was up for.

The dark side of fandom? Both Justin Beiber and Zayn Malik have had similar worrying hashtags started about them [Photos: Getty]

A similarly concerning hashtag #CuttingForBieber started circulating in 2013 which hinted at Beliebers apparently self-harming in a bid to stop Justin Bieber to stop smoking weed. In the end it turned out to be a disturbing hoax set up to trick young fans into hurting themselves. Nice!

Last year, when Zayn Malik made the decision to quit One Direction, fans were bereft. Their heartbreak was there for all to see in the hashtags that consequently flooded social media: #AlwaysInOurHeartsZaynMalik, #ZaynPain, #ZaynWillAlwaysBeAPartOf1D and #OneDirectionNeedZayn

But the more worrying #Cut4Zayn was up there with the more innocent outpourings of upset. The idea being that if enough One Directioners self-harm, they could just persuade Zayn to backtrack on his decision to leave. But as with the #CuttingForBieber hashtag, experts also believe that particular trend could also have been started as some kind of concerning hoax.

Real or not, these kind of hashtags merely serve to encourage others to self-harm, and as such could have incredibly damaging, incredibly real consequences.

So if anyone is thinking of hurting themselves in the name of their favourite popstar please don’t.

In the words of Queen Bey herself “Don’t hurt yourself.”
