Bette Midler has launched a Twitter attack on Melania Trump, calling the first lady an "illegal alien" who "still can't speak English".

In a series of Tweets, the actress criticised Ms Trump as she gave a speech at the Republican National Convention on Tuesday evening.

The first lady, who is a US citizen born in Slovenia, closed the second night of the RNC from the Rose Garden at the White House, where she expressed her gratitude as an American and her support for President Donald Trump's re-election.

During Ms Trump's speech, Midler tweeted: "A UGE bore! She can speak several words in a few languages. Get that illegal alien off the stage!"

The First Wives Club star also wrote: "Oh, God. She still can’t speak English," and "You are one lucky Slovenian! And after all that surgery, you hit a kind of horrible jackpot, chained to [a] colossal idiot."

Midler immediately faced an intense backlash as people moved to defend the first lady.

Radio host Dana Loesch hit back at the actress, saying: "Xenophobe who speaks one language mocks immigrant who can speak five."

"The party of diversity mocks an American for her accent..." actor James Woods tweeted.

Conservative podcaster Allie Beth Stuckey tweeted: "Called it. The same people who call Trump a racist."

"Who knew xenophobia was the wind beneath your wings!" Fox Business host Kennedy quipped.

However, others joined Midler in their scathing criticism of Mrs Trump.

Comedian Kathy Griffin tweeted: "Seriously, f*** this b****."

CNN political analyst and Playboy White House correspondent Brian Karem replied to Griffin saying, "Makes me want to vomit."

It comes after Mrs Trump was attacked as a "foreigner" by former New York Times reporter Kurt Eichenwald over her newly-renovated Rose Garden last week.

He tweeted: “It is a destruction of our history, something no other First Lady would have had the gall to do.

“This is the first time I have been furious that @FLOTUS is a foreigner. She has no right to wreck our history.”

He later deleted the tweet and issued an apology.
