From Cosmopolitan

With fancy restaurants and cosy cinema dates officially off the cards this year, we’re turning to Netflix and a trusty supermarket dine-in deal this Valentine’s. Yep, the Valentine's Day meal deals are back.

Our team of testers ate their way through every meaty, veggie and plant-based menu, so you can make a beeline for the one that most appeals.

Whether you’re celebrating with flatmates or your lockdown lover, this year’s cost-saving bundles will give you both a night off cooking and won’t dent your bank balance. In fact, they all promise to save you more dough than if you bought each dish separately...and yes, they all include booze.

How we test

We got five pairs to give us their thoughts on 15 dine-in deals. In return, they offered their honest feedback on every starter, main, side and dessert, before chugging back the rest of the Prosecco.

So whether you’re looking for the easiest, the cheapest or the tastiest, these are the meal deals that came out on top...

The best Valentine's Day meal deal overall

Morrisons The Best Dine in for Two, £15, in store and online

Cheap Easyjet flights may be a distant memory, but this Morrisons meal deal had us feeling like we were in a cute trattoria. For meat-eaters, highlights include mussels in a rich chorizo broth (just add bread), and restaurant-quality beef wellington (that was impressively pink in the middle).

Our veggie friends were just as happy, with gooey tear-and-share camembert bread and oh-so-creamy dauphinoise (because who’s got the patience to slice spuds that thinly?). And to seal the deal, Morrisons has thrown in a bottle of its new rosé Prosecco. You can either share the salted caramel profiterole pyramid, or opt for individual vegan puds, with glittery chocolate sauce.

M&S Valentine’s Dine In, £20, in store only

Just in case you didn't get the memo, M&S reminds you in every course that this meal is for Valentine's Day. From the extra-long “Love Linguine”, to its vegan-friendly Plant Kitchen “Peppercorn Love Pie”, there’s nothing amore (geddit?) they could do. Those with a sweet tooth will go wild for the love heart churros, complete with chocolate dipping sauce, and additional white chocolate “Love Bugs”. At £20, it’s one of the pricier bundles, but as it includes a box of chocolates and fizz, we’re confident you won’t feel short changed.

Easiest Valentine's Day meal deal

Co-op’s £15 Irresistible Three-Course Meal Deal for Two, £15, in store only

Short of coming round and cooking it for you, Co-op couldn’t have made this meal deal more of a doddle. Faff-free starters include the likes of charcuterie and olives or savoury Mediterranean veg tarts, which just need a few minutes in the oven.

The creamy, golden salmon en croute (aka, posh fish pie) was an impressive centrepiece and worked a treat with the brand's pink Prosecco, and for dessert there’s warm chocolate and cherry brownies. So the only thing left to decide is who’s going to do the (minimal) washing up.

Best meat-free Valentine's Day meal deal

Waitrose & Partners Valentine's Day Meal Deal, £20, in store and online

Ensuring carnivores aren’t having all the fun, Waitrose has put together a pretty decadent meat-free bundle. Kick things off with gooey brie-like melts, before tucking into the impressive Morrocan-inspired pastry wheel for your mains. And although our meat-eaters loved the racks of lamb, they groaned under the weight of the carb-heavy sides. Thankfully Heston was on hand to wake them up with espresso martini in dessert form.

Best Valentine's Day meal deal for celebrating throughout February

Asda’s £15 Valentine’s Day Meal Deal, £15, in store and online

While most brands are limiting their meal deals to the Valentine’s Day weekend, Asda is going all out and offering it for most of Feb. And at £15 for steak and fizz, we’re tempted to have it every weekend. On test, it was the OTT chocolate dome that appealed most — just heat the chocolate sauce up and pour over to reveal a creamy heart made for Insta.

Veggie? The “No Duck” spring rolls were the ideal-sized entrée, and come with a sweet hoisin dip, and while the smoky chipotle-flavoured plant-based burgers were also a hit, the heart shape got a bit squished as we wrestled them out of the packet.

Best budget plant-based Valentine's Day meal deal

Sainsbury’s Valentine's Menu For Two, £20 or under, in store and online

If you’re not fussed about stuffy starters and sides, the Sainsbury’s plant-based main, dessert and fizz will only set you back £10. There’s not masses of choice but our panel rated the generously sized Plant Pioneer nut roast and super-sweet chocolate caramel dessert.

For meat eaters, it’s all about the brand’s Taste the Difference range, with scallops followed by sirloin steak and even that, we’re promised, will come in at £20 or under. Leaving you with more dough to spend on pressies.

Best price reduction on a Valentine's Day meal deal

Tesco Valentine's Meal Deal, £15, in store and online

Tesco has reduced the price of this year’s dine-in offering and thrown in an extra side to sweeten the deal. There’s an entirely vegan option, courtesy of its “Wicked Kitchen” range, featuring the likes of popcorn ‘chicken’ and ‘no beef’ welly, but on test it was the duck breast, served with a glossy plum sauce, that was most impressive. And as much as the heart-shaped chocolate brownie with glitter shimmer tasted great, we broke it getting it out the pack. Let’s hope that’s not an omen for this year’s love life.
