The Staircase is the new TV thriller we can't wait to watch
It's safe to say, bingeing brilliant boxsets has been one of our main pastimes in the last two years, and our TV drama obsession will not be slowing down any time soon. And, luckily for us, it doesn't have to, as there are a whole host of brand new shows heading to the small screen in 2022.
Best TV shows: What's coming out in 2022?
There's lots to look forward to in 2022 – including Florence Pugh's eerie-looking Netflix series, The Wonder, adapted from the bestselling novel of the same title by Room's Emma Donoghue.
The first look images of Oscar winner Viola Davis as Michelle Obama and The Crown's Gillian Anderson as Eleanor Roosevelt in The First Lady have also been released. The cast also includes Michelle Pfeiffer as Betty Ford.
HBO has also shared a sneak peek at Kaley Cuoco in The Flight Attendant season two, which we can expect on our screens later in 2022.
Netflix has revealed the first look image of Modern Family's Sofia Vergara as notorious real-life drug kingpin Griselda Blanco in its upcoming limited series, Griselda. The drama chronicles the real life of the savvy and ambitious Griselda, who created one of the most profitable cartels in history.
The trailer for Showtime's Anthology series Super Pumped, starring Uma Thurman and Joseph Gordon Levitt, has been released. The drama will chart the rise and fall of Uber CEO and co-founder Travis Kalanick.
Claire Danes has also been cast in FX's adaptation of New York Times best-seller Fleishman is in Trouble, co-starring Jesse Eisenberg and Lizzy Caplan.
Then, there's Michelle Dockery and Sienna Miller in Netflix's Anatomy of a Scandal, Netflix's anticipated adaptation of the international bestselling novel of the same name, by Sarah Vaughan. Big Little Lies's writer David E. Kelley is co-creator with Melissa James Gibson. Rupert Friend and Naomi Scott co-star.
HBO has also confirmed that Julian Fellowes's period drama The Gilded Age will be renewed for season 2. Selling Sunset fans rejoice as season 5 has now returned to Netflix - and there's a new agent in town... Plus, production on Penn Badgley's You is officially underway.
The hugely-anticipated prequel to Game of Thrones, House of Dragon, starring Matt Smith, will also be arriving this August. Based on George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood, the fantasy epic is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

Inspired by a true story, the eight-part series explores the life of crime writer Michael Peterson (Colin Firth) following the suspicious death of his wife, Kathleen Peterson (Toni Collette), whose body is found at the bottom of the stairs in their home.

2) The Time Traveler's Wife

Fans of the bestselling 2003 novel by Audrey Niffenegger will be thrilled to hear a new TV adaptation of The Time Traveler's Wife from HBO will be dropping in May.
Starring Game of Thrones' Rose Leslie and Sanditon's Theo James, it's a truly unique love story about Henry (a man with a genetic condition that causes him to travel through time without warning) and his wife, Clare. If you've never read it, then get the tissues ready.

3) The Winter Child

Line of Duty's Craig Parkinson (aka Dot) is teaming up with Harry Potter's Shirley Henderson (aka Moaning Myrtle) for a new Channel 5 drama.
The Winter Child will follow the story of Claudia, a lonely single mother and school nurse, who becomes embroiled in the case of local missing child Emily Winter. Her fascination quickly turns to an obsession, not only about finding out the truth of what happened to Emily but also with the missing girl's family.
Shirley Henderson will play Claudia, with Craig Parkinson in the role of English tutor George. The series will also star Ian-Lloyd Anderson, Lisa Dwyer Hog, Sara Powell and Ronan Leahy.
Speaking about the series, Giula Sandler, Creator, Writer and Executive Producer of The Winter Child said: "It is a dream come true to have The Winter Child made with such passionate and creatively inspiring collaborators. 4) House of Dragons

Based on George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood, this hugely-anticipated fantasy epic is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, telling the story of House Targaryen.
Doctor Who's Matt Smith takes the lead as as Prince Daemon Targaryen, the younger brother of King Viserys and heir to the throne, Daemon is a peerless warrior and a dragonrider who possesses the true blood of the dragon. But it is said that whenever a Targaryen is born, the gods toss a coin in the air…

Book seller-turned-serial-killer Joe Goldberg will be back on yet another twisted, murderous mission in season 4 of thriller You, adapted from the series of novels by Caroline Kepnes.
Along with the return of Penn Badgley as Joe in the new season, White Lotus star Lukas Gage will make his debut as Adam. Netflix describes Adam as "the warm, funny, and hard-partying son of a wealthy family who is famous for failing to meet their standards. But the one thing he did learn from his parents is to do whatever it takes to get what you want."

The glamorous real estate brokers at The Oppenheim Group are back! Prepare for more drama - and heartbreak - as Chrishelle Stause and Jason O recently confirmed their split, so we expect their relationship to be the focus of season 5.

7) The Gilded Age season 2

The Gilded Age, Julian Fellowes' sumptuous period drama for HBO, has been renewed for a second season. The Downton Abbey creator had recently disclosed that he and executive producer Gareth Neame had been formulating ideas for a second instalment. Now HBO have confirmed that the series will be back.
Francesca Orsi, exec vp programming at HBO Max, said in a statement: "Julian Fellowes and the entire Gilded Age family have thoroughly captivated us with their tale of late 19th century New York City extravagance. Along with our partners at Universal Television, we couldn’t be prouder to embark on a season two journey with this extraordinarily talented team."
The series, set in 1882 in New York, stars Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector, Louisa Jacobson, Denée Benton, Taissa Farmiga, Blake Ritson, Simon Jones, Harry Richardson, Thomas Cocquerel, Jack Gilpin, Cynthia Nixon and Christine Baranski.

8) Anatomy of a Scandal

10) Fleishman is in Trouble

Claire Danes joins Jesse Eisenberg and Lizzie Caplan to star in FX's adaptation of Taffy Brodesser-Akner's best-selling debut novel, Fleishman is in Trouble.
The story, set in New York, follows forty-something Toby Fleishman (Eisenberg), as he adapts to modern day dating following the demise of his marriage to successful talent agent Rachel. His sexual freedom is hindered when Rachel suddenly disappears, leaving him in sole charge of his two children which begins to impact his job as a hepatologist.

11) Super Pumped

The trailer for Showtime's Anthology series Super Pumped, which charts the rise and fall of Uber CEO and co-founder Travis Kalanick (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), has been released.
Uma Thurman will star as Arianna Huffington in the drama, which will "depict the roller-coaster ride of the upstart transportation company, embodying the highs and lows of Silicon Valley", according to Variety.
Arianna co-founded The Huffington Post and was an Uber board member. Based on the book of the same title by Mike Isaac, the drama will follow Uber CEO Kalanick and his sometimes tumultuous relationship with his mentor Bill Gurley (Kyle Chandler).
The anthology series will focus on a new business world story for each season.

Pam & Tommy, starring Lily James and Sebastian Stan, is airing on Disney +, with all 8 episodes ready to stream now.
The eight-part comedy drama chronicles the relationship between then-Baywatch star Pamela Anderson and Mötley Crüe drummer Lee, who married less than a week after they met in 1995. A sex tape the pair made during their honeymoon was stolen from their home and distributed online, with Pamela suing the distributor, Internet Entertainment Group, before reaching a settlement.
The series is directed by i,Tonya's Craig Gillespie, and the cast also includes Seth Rogen, Nick Offerman, Andrew Dice Clay and Taylor Schilling. Seth also serves as executive producer.

Modern Family's Sofia Vergara will play infamous drug trafficker Griselda Blanco in a new Netflix limited series.
Netflix says: "Griselda chronicles the real life of savvy and ambitious Colombian business woman, Griselda Blanco, who created one of the most profitable cartels in history.
"A devoted mother, Blanco's lethal blend of charm and unsuspecting savagery helped her expertly navigate between family and business leading her to become widely known as the 'Black Widow'."
Vergara said in a statement: "Griselda Blanco was a larger-than-life character whose ruthless but ingenious tactics allowed her to rule a billion dollar empire years before many of the most notorious male kingpins we know so much about. We are thrilled to have found the perfect partners in Eric, Andrés and Netflix to help us bring this story of her life to the screen."
The actress will be joined by fellow Colombian native Andrés Baiz who will direct all episodes of the limited drama and also serves as Executive Producer. Ingrid Escajeda (Justified, Empire) who co-wrote the first episode with Doug Miro, will act as show-runner.

Julia Garner stars as Anna Delvey, the Instagram-legendary German heiress who conned her way into New York's social scene – before stealing their money in Netflix's Inventing Anna.
Inspired by the New York Magazine article How Anna Delvey Tricked New York's Party People by Jessica Pressler, the series explores whether Anna was New York's biggest con woman or the new portrait of the American dream.

As part of the 'New on HBO Max in 2022' trailer on YouTube, we've had a first look at The Flight Attendant season 2.
Kaley Cuoco's brilliant turn as flight attendant Cassie – whose life gets turned upside down after she wakes up in a hotel room with a dead man and no memory – earned her a Golden Globe nomination. So, we're beyond thrilled that the tense Sky thriller is coming back for a second season, this time set in sunny California.
Star Cuoco recently teased plot lines for the upcoming series, revealing to Variety that season 2 will see Cassie grappling with her new sober life and plunging headfirst into drama in her new role as a CIA asset. We can't wait!

Helena Bonham Carter will play TV star Noele Gordon in a new series from It's a Sin writer Russell T Davies.
ITV says: "Noele (or Nolly to her friends) was a legend in her own lifetime. As flame-haired widow Meg Richardson in the long-running soap opera Crossroads, she was one of the most famous people in Britain. Then in 1981, at the height of the show's success and the peak of Nolly's fame, she was axed without ceremony, without warning and with no explanation.
"With the boss's words "all good things must come to an end" ringing in her ears, Noele Gordon found herself thrown out of the show that was her life for over 18 years."

ITV's big budget adaptation of the Ipcress File will star Lucy Boynton, Peaky Blinders star Joe Cole, Tom Hollander, and Ashley Thomas.
Based on the first in the Harry Palmer series by Len Deighton, the high-octane espionage thriller is set in Berlin and London during the 1960 - and features Cole taking on the iconic role of Harry.
ITV says: "It's 1963. Cold war rages between West and East. Nuclear bombers are permanently airborne. In this highly charged atmosphere, we join Harry Palmer – a British army sergeant on the make in Berlin. In this newly partitioned city, a sharp working-class young man with sophisticated tastes can make a lot of money. Amazon recently released first look images of season four of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel. The photos feature Rachel Brosnahan's Midge looking melancholy in what appears to be a showgirls' dressing room, and Abe (Tony Shalhoub) and Rose (Marin Hinkle) enjoying dinner together in front of the TV.
Gilmore Girls stars Kelly Bishop and Milo Ventimiglia star in the new season, and are joined by fellow guest stars Reid Scott (Veep), Kayli Carter (Mrs. America), Jason Ralph (husband of Rachel Brosnahan), and Gideon Glick (The Detour).

Jessica Raine and Peter Capaldi star in Amazon Prime's six-part mind-bending thriller, The Devil's Hour.
The series follows the story of Lucy, played by Raine, who is woken every night by terrifying visions at exactly 3.33am: the devil’s hour.
Amazon says: "Her eight-year-old son is withdrawn and emotionless. Her mother speaks to empty chairs. Her house is haunted by the echoes of a life that isn't her own. When Lucy's name is inexplicably connected to a string of brutal murders in the area, the answers that have evaded her all these years will finally come into focus."

The Crown's Claire Foy will star as Facebook's chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg in Doomsday Machine.
Adapted from New York Times award-winning reporters Sheera Frenkel and Cecilia Kang's bestselling book, An Ugly Truth: Inside Facebook’s Battle for Domination, the drama will 'lift the veil on the relationship between Mark Zuckerberg and Sandberg and the obstacles Facebook has faced on its relentless quest for growth', according to Variety.

Elizabeth Olsen stars as Candy Montgomery in HBO Max's Love & Death, a limited series based on the true story of Texas housewife Candy Montgomery’s murder of Betty Gore in 1980.
Written by Big Little Lies and The Undoing's David E Kelley, the drama is inspired by the book Evidence of Love: A True Story of Passion and Death in the Suburbs and a collection of articles from Texas Monthly. The cast also includes Jesse Plemons, The Underground Railroad's Lily Rabe, Patrick Fugit, Keir Gilchrist, Elizabeth Marvel, Tom Pelphrey and Krysten Ritter.

Poldark's Aidan Turner will lead ITV's new thriller The Suspect, adapted from the debut novel of the same title by Michael Robotham.
From the producers of Line of Duty and Vigil, the series introduces Doctor Joe O'Loughlin, played by Turner, who appears to have the perfect life – a devoted wife, a loving daughter, successful practice as a clinical psychologist, media profile and a publishing deal. He's even a hero online after rescuing a young patient who was ready to jump from the tenth floor of the hospital where Joe works.
ITV says: "When a young woman is found in a shallow grave in a West London cemetery, veteran police officer DI Vincent Ruiz and his young partner DS Riya Devi are assigned to the investigation. But has the young woman been murdered or is this a case of suicide?
"As a successful author, Doctor Joe’s opinion is much sought after and when he meets DS Devi he’s only too willing to offer help with profiling and his expertise. Now known for his risk-taking and rule-breaking does Joe have more to hide? His recent diagnosis with a debilitating illness could explain his behaviour. David Tennant will play Alexander Litvinenko, the former Russian Federal Security Services and KGB officer whose death, from polonium poisoning in November 2006, triggered one of the most complex and dangerous investigations in the history of the Metropolitan Police.
The series will tell the story of how Scotland Yard Officers worked for ten years to prove who was responsible.
The drama will also focus upon the story of Marina, played by Margarita Levieva (The Deuce, The Blacklist), Alexander's fearless, dignified widow.

Bend it Like Beckham star Parminder Nagra will star as Detective Inspector Rachita Ray in a four-part drama written by Line of Duty actress and screenwriter Maya Sondhi.
Described by ITV as "fresh, relevant and thought-provoking", the series will follow Leicester-born Rachita Ray, a police officer who takes on a case that forces her to confront a lifelong personal conflict between her British identity and her South Asian heritage.
Jed Mercurio will serve as executive producer.
ITV's synopsis continues: "Rachita achieves the promotion she’s been waiting for when she’s asked to join a homicide investigation. However, on her first day she’s told the murder to which she’s been assigned is a ‘Culturally Specific Homicide'.
"Rachita’s heart sinks – she suspects she's a 'token appointment', chosen for her ethnicity rather than her ability. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Rachita sticks to the case, determined to both find the killer and call out the obvious biases her colleagues are bringing to the investigation. And it’s far from easy. The case isn’t a run-of-the-mill murder; it involves delving deep into the dangerous world of organised crime.

Line of Duty's Martin Compston and Rochenda Sandall star in six-part thriller The Rig, set an oil rig stationed off the Scottish coast in the dangerous waters of the North Sea.
The crew of the Kinloch Bravo are waiting to be collected and taken back to dry land, but an all-enveloping fog suddenly descends cutting them off from all communication with the shore and the outside world.
As the crew endeavour to discover what's driving this unknown force, a major accident forces them to ask questions about who they can really trust.
The cast also includes Schitt's Creek star Emily Hampshire and Game of Thrones actors Iain Glen and Owen Teale.

29) The Wonder

Black Widow star Florence Pugh is set to appear in the very sinister-looking upcoming Netflix adaption, based on Emma Donoghue's bestselling novel of the same name.
Set in Ireland in the Midlands in 1862, the creepy story follows a well-educated young English nurse (Pugh) who arrives in a small, deprived Irish village to observe 11-year-old Anna, who claims to have eaten nothing for months, but miraculously, appears to feel completely normal.
As tourists and pilgrims gather to witness the girl — the plot reveals whether the young girl is indeed an other worldly saint or if the village is harbouring a dark, ominous secret.

30) The Staircase
Release date: 5 May on HBO and NOW TV
Sophie Turner is set to star in this brand new HBO true-crime drama, based on the real story of novelist Michael Peterson, who was accused of murdering his wife, Kathleen in 2001.
Fans of the genre will already be familiar with the infamous story, known one of the most compelling cases of all time, which was previously made into a a docu-series — released between 2004 and 2018, as well as a Netflix documentary in 2018.
After Kathleen Peterson was found dead at the bottom of the stairs of her home in 2001, suspicions arose that her husband Michael had orchestrated the murder and staged her death to look accidental.
HBO's 8-episode version will be an adaptation of the existing docu-series and will star Colin Firth and Toni Colette as Michael and Kathleen Peterson, Sophie as one of their adoptive daughters — as well as Juliette Binoche, Rosemarie DeWitt and Parker Posey.
Since the show was only picked up by HBO in March, we imagine it will be some time before this hits screens, but it's safe to say, we're already very excited...JEAN-BAPTISTE LACROIX
