Chalet du Lac Besson - best restaurants in alpe d'huez
Chalet du Lac Besson is worth the tricky route on the slopes in Alpe d'Huez - lionel royet

Alpe d’Huez may not be about Michelin-starred fine dining, but foodies will find some stand-out restaurants here, notably Au Chamois d’Or in town. Although largely a self-catering resort, with many visitors dining in, it is also strong on good-value and family restaurants.

For further Alpe d'Huez inspiration, see our guides to the resort's best accommodation and après ski.

On the mountain

Auberge de l’Alpette

Just above the bottom of the Alpette drag-lift on the run down to the village of Oz, Auberge de l’Alpette serves the best omelettes and salads in the ski area. It's a great place for families with children who have energy to burn – after lunch, parents can sit on the terrace enjoying a coffee or a final glass of wine while their offspring do laps on the greens served by the lift.

Chalet du Lac Besson

This cosy chalet is reached via a path off the red Chamois run and a wicked little schuss, followed by a one- to three-minute climb up the other side. The time it takes to get to Chalet du Lac Besson varies according to level of commitment to the schuss, which in poor light can be particularly tricky. However, it’s worth it for meat and seafood grilled on the open fireplace. The lamb chops and the prawns are both warmly recommended.
