The Black Swan in Oldstead, North Yorkshire, has been named the UK's best fine dining restaurant in Tripadvisor’s 2020 Traveler’s Choice Best of the Best Awards.
The Michelin-starred dining spot came fourth in the world, with only two other UK restaurants named in the list of 25, specifically The Fat Duck and L’Enclume. The results are based on on a full year of Tripadvisor reviews.
The family-run restaurant with nine bedrooms sits amid a 160-acre farm and a three-acre kitchen garden. The kitchen is helmed by Tommy Banks, who became the youngest chef to win a Michelin star in 2013, aged 24. He and his staff are known for their inventive ways of cooking vegetables and fruit, all hand-picked from the garden.
"We're thrilled to be named the best fine dining restaurant in the UK, and number four in the world," said Banks. "We work so hard to provide our customers with the best possible dining experience, and it's always such an honour to be recognised for it."
The Black Swan will reopen its doors on 12 August, after having closed in March due to the pandemic. It will be open for service from Wednesdays to Sundays and hopes to delight customers with a new tasting menu. The family reopened their second restaurant, Roots, in nearby York, last week.
Although the main event is the food, the 16th-century coaching inn offers overnight stays for diners only - characterful rooms named after the dales and farms around Oldstead.
“Winners of the 2020 Travelers’ Choice Awards should be proud of this distinguished recognition," said Kanika Soni, chief commercial pfficer at Tripadvisor. "Although it’s been a challenging year for travel and hospitality, we want to celebrate our partners' achievements. Award winners are beloved for their exceptional service and quality. Not only are these winners well deserving, they are also a great source of inspiration for travellers/diners as the world begins to venture out again.”
