The best non-mask face coverings to try now

As we try to navigate safely out of lockdown, face masks are set to become compulsory in shops in England from July 24. They’re already mandatory while travelling on public transport, and so have quickly become essential everyday items.

For those who aren’t keen on the traditional medical mask, this new rule presents a conundrum. Be it down to the logistics and comfort factor (ear ties are tricky with long hair, a mask is far from ideal if you're wearing make-up, and the inevitable steamy lenses are a pain for glasses-wearers), or due to the restrictiveness of a structured mask, many people aren’t keen on wearing them at all, let alone while doing their whole weekly shop.

However any face covering is better than none at all, and from next Friday 24 July, a face covering is a must for your local supermarket shop or trip to a shopping centre. 'Together with other social distancing measures, face coverings can make shoppers feel even more confident about returning to the High Street,' noted Health Secretary Matt Hancock.

Rather than relying on holding a tissue over your mouth, which offers questionable protection, or indeed forgoing any covering at all and risking a £100 fine, look to these stylish, safer options instead.

If you're thinking of making your own mask, read our guide to the easiest and most effective patterns, as tried and tested by Telegraph readers here.

Printed silk scarves

Silk floral scarf, £95, Aspinal of London; Paisley silk scarf, £75, Liberty London; Printed pleated silky scarf, £12.99, Mango

Going sans ear loops seems to be the easiest way to ensure your 'mask' is comfortable. A silky scarf is undeniably the most luxurious option: you can opt for prints or hues to suit your typical style, and as they're a timeless fashion staple, they don't run the risk of completely selling out, which medical face masks did at the beginning of lockdown.

Ensure yours stays put by tying a knot in the ends at the back of your head.

Cotton bandanas

Much like the aforementioned silk option, cotton bandanas are breathable and can be mixed and matched to suit your look. They're slightly sturdier than silk versions, too, which means they're much more likely to stay in place.

Cotton is a brilliant option: a study by The Royal Society found that the use of cotton masks lowered the risk of infection by 54 per cent.

Jersey snoods

Infinity scarf, £12.99, Barts at John Lewis; Jersey snood, £1.75, Wordans; Antibacterial snood, £15, Accessorize

A snood is a slightly more inconspicuous option should you not like the idea of a statement scarf. Choose one in a neutral shade and a casual jersey material and it'll keep you protected without looking outrè. As there's less for you to adjust thanks to the simple elastic rim, a snood should also minimise the need for touching your mask, which also poses a risk.

Handerkerchief + hair clips

Tortoiseshell hair slides, £22, Tort; Floral handkerchief, £17, Ted Baker

Should you be in the market for a DIY option, or find yourself without a mask and needing to enter an enclosed space, this option is the one you'll likely be able to throw together quickly.

In lieu of ear loops, hair clips will make sure your material stays put, covering both your nose and mouth.
