Best keto meal delivery services of 2024, tested and expert-approved

About half of Americans followed a diet in 2023, and the high-fat, low-carb ketogenic diet is one popular choice, with approximately 4% of dieters giving it a shot. Over the last decade, this diet gained interest as people searched for effective ways to manage their weight and improve their overall health. The keto diet functions by putting the body into a state called ketosis, where it burns fat for energy instead of relying on carbohydrates. Also, cutting out carbs may make it easier to maintain a calorie deficit for some people. Sustained ketosis may provide benefits that can occur when calories are restricted by any means, such as improved blood sugar levels, short-term weight loss, better control over appetite and improved blood cholesterol levels for some people.

However, planning and preparing keto meals can be challenging, which is why many people can't sustain the diet. Restrictive diets like keto require extra time for planning, shopping and meal preparation, which can be hard to do on your own, says registered dietitian Megan Huff of Nutrition by Megan. "The support of a meal delivery service can help you stick to a keto diet, plus keto meal kits offer variety, so you won't get bored of eating the same thing," she adds. Many meal kit delivery services offer keto-friendly options, providing either meal kits or fully prepared meals and groceries delivered weekly to make following this diet easier.

The meals are designed (often by chefs and dietitians) to provide preportioned ingredients and easy-to-follow recipes, making sticking to a keto diet easier, while already prepared alternatives offer effortless convenience. Weekly meal deliveries also eliminate the need for grocery shopping and meal planning, offering a level of convenience that's particularly appealing to those who lead busy lives, which is most of us nowadays.

Factor stands out as the best overall keto meal kit because of its focus on ensuring nutritious meals that taste great, thanks to gourmet chefs, and a consistently fresh menu of single-serving meals. While Huff doesn't recommend the keto diet for her clients, she likes that Factor meals are created under the guidance of registered dietitians. "Factor meals are premade, saving you time in the kitchen, and are convenient to bring to work for lunch or quickly heat up for dinner," she says. The meals are never frozen, ensuring optimal nutrition and taste.

Factor's keto meals contain at least 60% of calories from fat, around 20% of calories from protein and 10% or less of calories from carbohydrates, aligning with the typical macronutrient distribution of the ketogenic diet. The company also provides meals that cater to other dietary guidelines and preferences, such as Vegan & Veggie, Calorie Smart and Protein Plus, which you can choose from if someone in your household wants to order along with you but is not on a keto diet. You can choose between six and 18 meals per week, with more than 35 meal options available each week.

One of Factor's standout features is its complimentary 20-minute virtual nutrition coaching session. This session, conducted by expert dietitians, allows customers to ask nutrition-related questions, set personalized dietary goals and equip themselves for success. If you are interested in learning more about the keto diet and your nutritional options, the added value of a professional consultation enhances the overall Factor experience, making it more than just a meal delivery service.

Factor meals cost between $11 and $13.50 per serving, depending on your chosen meal plan. For instance, ordering 18 meals per week would cost somewhere between $198 and $243. The cost may be less if you have a promotional code.

Factor also prioritizes sustainability with its packaging. Most of the packaging materials are recyclable, including the food trays made from BPA-free plastic.

HelloFresh is a top-rated meal kit delivery service that earns our top pick for families because of its variety, affordability and customization. While it doesn't specifically cater to the keto diet, you can create keto-friendly meals by swapping proteins or side dishes, and its low-carb menu options provide a great jumping-off point. You can choose meals from a broad range of dietary options, including Meat & Veggie, Veggie/Plant-Based, Pescatarian, Quick & Easy, Family-Friendly and Fit & Wholesome (meals under 650 calories).

Each week, customers can choose from over 100 meal options, so you’re sure to see regular rotation and variety in the menu that will satisfy most tastes and dietary preferences, making it an excellent choice for those with specific nutritional needs or those who appreciate variety in their meals.

The meal kits are cost-effective, although prices vary depending on your specific selections. A standard order of three meals per week for four people, including shipping, costs about $130. But there are several box options, depending on your needs and household. You can order up to four servings per meal and up to six meals per week. HelloFresh often offers significant discounts to first-time customers, making it an affordable option for those wanting to try out the service.

The kits provide premeasured ingredients and easy-to-follow recipes, making meal preparation straightforward, enjoyable and typically easy enough to get your kids involved. However, sometimes the meals take a bit longer than suggested on the recipe cards.

HelloFresh emphasizes reducing food waste and offers generous portions, which is a plus for those who appreciate having leftovers for the next day's lunch or dinner. Packaging is eco-friendly and designed to ensure that each delivery produces fewer carbon emissions.

Meals arrive: Prepped and ready to cook | Variety: Hundreds of recipes to choose from plus grocery items | Dietary choices: Anti-inflammatory, high-protein, gluten-free, gut-friendly, vegetarian, less sugar, dairy-free and 13 additional options | Skill level: Beginner-friendly | Taste: 6/10

Hungryroot is a standout choice for the best customizable plant-based meal kit because of its wide range of meal options for plant-based eaters and its hybrid approach to meal delivery. While it does not specifically cater to the keto diet, and it's best that you already have experience with the keto diet's fundamentals, the service is highly customizable, allowing you to select from numerous ingredients and recipes that can be mixed and matched for keto-friendly meals. There are several categories for filtering the recipes, including Vegan, Vegetarian, Pescatarian, Allergen-Free, 500 Calories or Less, and Kid-Friendly.

Plant-based diets have many benefits, with research showing an association between eating plant-based protein and having lower levels of risky visceral fat accumulation, as well as improved insulin resistance. Hungryroot's meal kits offer numerous options for tasty plant-based proteins and plenty of veggies to help you eat a rounded diet. However, if you're following a true keto diet, you'll need to calculate your carbohydrate intake carefully — many plant-based proteins, while incredibly healthy, are also higher in carbohydrates (like quinoa or a combination of rice and beans).

The website provides an option to build a customized “food profile" based on answers to an initial quiz. It also uses your ongoing feedback and orders to tweak and improve your custom meal plans. Meal kits arrive with full-size items that you might not entirely use up when you cook, but the service prioritizes food waste reduction and delivering generous portion sizes, which could mean you'll have leftovers for later meals. Some meal preparations may take longer than expected, but many meal options are beginner-friendly, making them suitable for less experienced cooks or those with busy schedules.

Hungryroot's pricing ranges from $9.69 to $11.39 per serving. This doesn't include any additional grocery items (outside of the ingredients necessary for the kits) you might want to add to your order. The standard order costs depend on the number of meals and grocery items selected. With the company's focus on sustainability, all outer packaging materials are recyclable, and Hungryroot offers a wide range of meat alternatives in its recipe database.

Weekly menu options: 35+ | Diet choices: Paleo, Whole30, keto, Mediterranean, low-carb, low-calorie, plant-based, performance-nutrition | Skill level: Beginner-friendly | Taste: 8/10

Huff says she's a big fan of Territory for its diverse, delicious, high-quality meals. "What makes them stand out is their collaboration with local chefs, giving you unique meal choices based on your location — plus, all of Territory's meals are gluten-free, dairy-free and refined-sugar-free, which is a big win for those with specific dietary needs," adds Huff. Territory combines nutritionist input with creative recipes you can filter by categories like paleo, Whole30, keto, Mediterranean, low-carb, low-calorie, plant-based, ingredients you want to avoid or meals under a certain number of calories, macronutrient range or sodium levels.

We especially appreciate that all Territory meals are made without refined sugar, dairy or gluten. I did not tell any of my testers what was not in the meals and no one noticed or found them lacking in flavor or texture. The consensus was these are healthy meals with fresh ingredients that take the pressure off of dinner on busy weeknights, and we would have been happy eating some of them weekly, especially when the temptation to pick up unhealthy takeout strikes.

Territory meals start at $13 each. One delivery of eight meals a week is $130 (less if you use a promo code). In most regions, deliveries will incur a flat shipping charge starting at $7.95, although it varies depending on where you live. This charge is per shipment, so keep that in mind if you're requesting more than one shipment per week.

There are 35-plus menu options per week, and you may order a maximum of 12 meals per delivery day, or 24 meals per week. Some meals are ready to eat cold and do not require heating. For most other meals, you can microwave according to package instructions.

We gave Territory an 8/10 for taste, and we found ourselves looking for these meals in the fridge instead of turning to less healthy quick meal options. That's a win in the taste category. Most of the packaging is recyclable to boot. You can find more specific information about recycling the packaging here.

Pros
  • No refined sugar, dairy or gluten
  • Arrives freshly prepared, not frozen
  • Individual or family-size portions available
Cons
  • Expensive

Meals arrive: Meal kits ready to cook | Variety: 35+ recipes | Dietary choices: Calorie-conscious, carb-conscious, vegetarian, easy-prep, under 30 minutes | Skill level: Beginner-friendly | Taste: 7/10

Home Chef is our pick for the best budget keto meal delivery service because of its versatility, variety of meal options and generous portion sizes, often leaving leftovers. While there are low-carb options, there isn’t a keto-specific plan, but there is room for customization, which can be used to create more keto-friendly meals. Other categories to filter meal choices include Calorie-Conscious and Vegetarian. You can also make your choices based on how much time they will take to prepare. You can add fully cooked proteins, breakfast items, quick lunches, snacks and desserts to your order, as desired.

Pricing starts at $7.99 per serving. For example, three meals per week for four people, including shipping, costs $131. There's quite a bit of accommodation in ordering for different household sizes and meal frequencies, and you can order up to six servings per meal and up to six meals per week.

Home Chef's meals are easy to prepare, so even if you're a novice cook, you won't have trouble following the instructions. The ingredients are preportioned, which helps reduce food waste, and you'll be pleasantly surprised by the generous portion sizes with plenty of protein.

When you receive your meals, you'll find that they're packaged in recyclable materials, and the box size and amount of ice used are optimized to reduce carbon emissions and increase efficiency.

CookUnity stands out as the best keto meal delivery designed by chefs because of its unique, expertly created menus with hundreds of meal options, all originating from chefs of different backgrounds, culinary styles and levels of fame. When choosing the best meal delivery kits, there are several key factors to consider. These include cost, ease of use, menu choice, taste and eco-friendly packaging.

  • Cost: The cost of meal delivery services can vary widely, depending on the number of meals per week, servings per meal and specific dietary preferences. Prices typically range from $6 to $13 per serving. It's important to consider your budget and compare the cost per serving across different services.

  • Ease of use: Meal delivery kits are designed to make your life easier, so you’ll want to consider ease of use. Think about the simplicity of the ordering process, the cooking instructions' clarity and the convenience of the delivery schedule. Some services offer already prepared meals that only need to be heated, while others provide ingredients and recipes to cook the meal yourself.

  • Menu choice: The variety of recipes and the quality of ingredients are essential considerations. You'll want a service offering a variety of recipes that fit your dietary needs, such as keto, gluten-free or plant-based options. The ingredients should be fresh and high-quality.

  • Taste: Above all, you want your meals to be delicious. How a meal tastes can be subjective, so it's a good idea to read reviews or try a few different services to find one that suits your palate.

  • Eco-friendly packaging: Consider the packaging of the meal delivery service. Is there too much? Too little? Is it putting too much waste into the world? Many services try reducing their environmental impact by using recyclable or compostable packaging.

Every meal kit we reviewed has different strengths and weaknesses. Some are very easy, others offer more variety; some are great for families with picky eaters and special diets, and others are geared toward noncarnivores. We also tested some heat-and-eat premade meal options (remember when we used to call them TV dinners?) to throw into the mix as the easiest to make of the bunch.

To narrow down the list of the best meal delivery services, an in-house culinary expert, along with Yahoo testers and editors (including myself, a certified personal trainer and nutritionist), collectively tried 15 of the top delivery services with their families. We evaluated the services according to the number of weekly keto menu choices offered, the quality and freshness of the included ingredients, ease of cooking, cost, eco-friendly packaging and, most of all, taste.

To ensure we were thorough in our meal kit research, we researched and tested more than 15 meal delivery services that offered keto-friendly meals (or those that could be adjusted to a more keto-friendly diet). The meal kit services that advertised keto-friendly meals that did not make the cut for this list, in the majority of the cases, lacked enough variety each week to keep the meals fresh and exciting, such as Fresh N Lean. Services like Green Chef offer a huge variety of meals each week, including keto, but we did not see where these meals were clearly labeled keto and found you had to decipher which of the weekly meals were keto-friendly, which is not easy for those just starting the dietary plan.

The keto diet has been the subject of numerous studies, with research highlighting its potential health benefits. For instance, a research review published in BMC Medicine found that a keto diet can lead to weight loss, which improves heart health by lowering triglyceride levels. Another review in the British Journal of Nutrition reported better blood sugar control for people with type 2 diabetes following a keto diet. It's important to note that many of these benefits can be obtained by following a balanced diet, and the keto diet is not a magic solution; it's just one option for creating a calorie deficit that can help with short-term weight loss. As registered dietitian nutritionist Michael Hershey explains, "When calories are equated, a ketogenic diet is not superior for fat loss when compared to other styles of eating." However, some people find keto helps with appetite control, which can play a role in weight loss success. There are potential downsides that you should discuss with your health care provider, such as headaches, fatigue, low exercise tolerance, nutritional deficiencies, low fiber intake, high saturated-fat intake and weight regain if you stop following the diet, according to Hershey.

The keto diet drastically reduces the amount of carbs you eat, which can lead to a calorie deficit, causing weight loss. Also, instead of relying on carbohydrates for energy, a body in ketosis makes energy from the fat you eat and the fat stored in your body. When fat is metabolized instead of carbohydrates, ketone bodies, instead of glucose, are used for energy. Ketone bodies may help reduce appetite, though the exact reasons aren't clear. Much of the initial weight loss from the keto diet comes from water loss, and in scientific studies, keto and other low-carb diets don't seem to work better for losing weight than diets that also limit calories or other dietary approaches like low-fat vegetarian diets. Instead, keto is one option that may work well for some people. It's worth noting that while the keto diet can help with short-term weight loss, it has risks, so replacing it with a more sustainable, balanced diet once weight loss is achieved is a good idea.

Healthy keto meals and snacks typically include meat, fish, nonstarchy vegetables and fats. If you’re not relying on a meal delivery service, simple recipes like a pepper, onion, cheese and spinach omelet, chicken Caesar salad, baked chicken breast with green beans and cauliflower rice, or turkey burgers wrapped in large romaine leaves can make following a keto diet delicious and easy.

Meal delivery services provide preportioned ingredients and recipes delivered to your door, enabling you to prepare fresh-cooked meals at home without the need to grocery shop or measure ingredients. Services that offer already prepared meals are even more convenient, often with a higher price point, but they save you time in the kitchen.

With each delivery, you'll receive preportioned ingredients and recipes that may feed two, four or more people. There are options to suit every dietary need and preference, and you can usually choose your delivery day. Prepackaged meals come already prepared and typically just require you to heat them up before enjoying them.

Meal delivery services can save money by reducing food waste and eliminating the need for time-consuming grocery shopping trips. However, the cost-effectiveness will depend on your unique eating habits and lifestyle.

Most meal delivery services allow you to skip a week or cancel your subscription at any time, providing flexibility to adapt to your changing needs.
