We look ahead to the hottest hotels coming to New York in 2018, from sleek stays off Wall Street to boutique boltholes in Brooklyn.

Hoxton Williamsburg, Brooklyn

Having opened hotels in some of the world's coolest areas (Shoreditch and Holborn in London; Amsterdam's Canal District; Sentier in Paris), it seems only natural that Hoxton Hotels is gearing up for a big opening in New York later this year – naturally in the Brooklyn hipster stronghold of Williamsburg. The brand's first opening in North America will house 175 guest rooms, each fitted out in standard Hoxton style: minimalist design with contrasting materials such as brass, wood and concrete, and enlivened with a vintage look. Diners will have the choice of three restaurants; drinkers the run of a rooftop bar with views out towards Manhattan.

Mr C. Seaport, Seaport District

The first Mr. C on the East Coast (the other is in Beverly Hills). The interior design at this property, in the up-and-coming Seaport district, is the work of Danish architect Thomas Juul-Hansen, who has received acclaim for his work on chic New York restaurants such as Jean Georges, Nougatine and Matsugen. The hotel will offer 66 guest rooms, furnished in teak veneer and with amenities such as interactive 4K televisions and rain showers. High-end accommodation consists of 10 suites with balcony terraces offering panoramic views of the Brooklyn Bridge and the East River. Guests will also be able to make use of the Lobby Lounge (serving afternoon tea and evening drinks), a Cipriani restaurant serving traditional Italian cuisine, a fitness centre and an area for private functions.

Sister City, Bowery

From the inner workings of Atelier Ace, the studio behind the Ace Hotel brand, comes Sister City, “an experiment in essentialism” which is due to open in New York later this year. While details are thin on the ground, it seems the presiding philosophy will be one of "bare minimalism", providing guests with shelter while encouraging them to head out and explore the wider world. According to its website, the 200-room hotel will be “distilled to its working parts”, which include (but are not limited to) a roof, potted plants and "soft feeling, courage and spirit". A rather mysterious list of influences cited by the creative team include Finnish saunas, Japanese bento boxes and prehistoric cave dwellings.

The Artezan, Financial District

The Artezan will see a former office block close to Wall Street converted into a swanky collection of 89 'high-tech' suites, although the gadgetry that earns them this distinction has not yet been revealed. What we do know, however, is that guests will have access to a state-of-the-art yoga and fitness centre, a restaurant and HIDE, a glass-encased lounge and cocktail bar occupying the top two floors of the 21-storey tower, promising 'spectacular New York City skyline views'.

Times Square EDITION, Midtown Manhattan

It's a bit of a bumper year for EDITION Hotels, with openings in such far-flung destinations as Barcelona, Bangkok, Shanghai and West Hollywood. And NYC will receive a second outpost of the Ian Schrager-Marriott International project, this one overlooking the city's most famous intersection. It's going to be a big one, too, with 452 guest rooms sitting atop four storeys of public space: a 5,000 sq ft performance venue, a gym and a lobby lounge. Dining outlets will include a signature restaurant with an outdoor terrace looking out over the bustle below.
