Calls for Oprah Winfrey to run for President of the United States have flooded social media after the speech she gave at last night’s ceremony. After becoming the first black woman to win the Cecil B DeMille Lifetime Achievement award, she declared: “So I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon!”

Winfrey continued, “And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say ‘me too’ again.” And of course, she was met with a standing ovation. Last night, the predominantly female cast of The Handmaid’s Tale took home the award for Best Drama TV Series and actress Elisabeth Moss dedicated the trophy to author Margaret Atwood.

Emma Watson brought the executive director of women’s organisation Imkaan, Marai Larasi, to the 2018 Golden Globe Awards.

Having dedicated her time to campaigning for equal gender rights in recent years, Watson is a key advocate for change and bringing Larasi as her guest helped to shift the industry’s focus onto the issues of sexual harassment. [Photo: Getty]

It was major news for the cast of Big Little Lies at last night’s Golden Globe Awards. Nicole Kidman stole the show as she was awarded with the trophy for Best Actress while the television series took home the award for Best Limited Series.

Meryl Streep joined fellow actress Emma Watson in inviting activists to the 2018 Golden Gobe Awards. Streep was joined on the red carpet by director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance, Ai-jen Poo.
Streep told E! News: “She and I are so happy to be here in this particular moment. I think that people are aware now of a power imbalance and it’s something that leads to abuse. It’s led to abuse in our own industry, and it’s led to abuse across domestic workers’ field of work. It’s in the military, it’s in Congress, it’s everywhere and we want to fix that. We feel sort of emboldened in this particular moment to stand together in a thick black line dividing then from now.”
