Gran Hotel Montesol Ibiza

Ibiza, Spain

8Telegraph expert rating

The Gran Hotel Montesol – which originally opened in 1933, claiming the title of the island’s first hotel – is an elegant building situated in the heart of Ibiza Town. The building is a Unesco Property of Cultural Interest, so great care has been taken by new owners, Curio Collection by Hilton, to maintain its original charm. Spanish designer Lázaro Rosa-Violán has stayed true to the hotel’s authentic style, although there are flashes of pizzazz visible throughout. Monogrammed linen-laden beds that could double as clouds are the pièce de resistance. Aside from that, all of the hotel’s 33 rooms epitomise modern luxury; there's floor-to-ceiling windows and balconies, the majority of which boast views of the square below. Hotel Hacienda Na Xamena

Na Xamena, Ibiza, Spain

7Telegraph expert rating

The hotel is built into the side of a cliff, concealed by pine forests all around, with fabulous views of the Mediterranean in all its glory. There is a lot of boho-shabby-chic gorgeousness going on in this traditional Ibizan structure but the showpiece is the Cascades, a series of heated outdoor thalassotherapy pools linked by waterfalls on different levels, seeming to tumble down the hillside. Nearly all the 77 rooms and suites have sea views. Décor was all white with a silver sofa, lending a 1970s disco vibe. The open-air lounge with its cushions shaped like giant lizards is a fabulous spot to sprawl while watching the sun go down with a cocktail or two before ambling into the Eden restaurant with its rustic tables on a series of terraces. Ibiza Gran Hotel

Ibiza, Spain

9Telegraph expert rating

This is a very grown-up place that manages to be a cool, calm place of retreat, even though the location is very urban. The owners, the Santandreu hotelier family from Mallorca, call it an ‘Art Hotel’ and it does indeed have a gallery feel with artworks everywhere by artists including Fernando Botero and Antoni Llena. There are 157 suites, all with original artwork and facing the pool or the harbour and Ibiza old town. With bamboo walls, warm neutral colours, original artworks and wood floors, the suites are not over-designed, just smart and comfortable.
