Celebrity calendars had been pretty quiet over the past few years, with months of lockdowns and quarantines postponing premiers and red carpets, and instead events needing to be held ‘behind closed doors’ (no fun at all), so celebrity fashion was forced to take a bit of a backseat too.
But 2022 brought the return of all things fabulous – The Oscars! The Grammys! The Met Gala! – and thank goodness.
Big-name events returned to how we remembered them from years gone by, with red carpets galore ready to whet our appetite with glorious outfits after two years of starvation. And celebrities were happy to oblige.
The Meta Gala, of course, is where famous faces really get to stretch their legs in terms of fashion forward thinking, with stars such as Blake Lively, Jessica Chastain and Jodie Turner-Smith leading the pack with their take on the ‘Gilded Glamour’ theme based on the museum’s In America: An Anthology of Fashion exhibition.
The Oscars, too, provided a backdrop for some of the biggest fashion moments of the year, both on the red carpet and at the after party. Lupita Nyong’o stunned in a gown that looked like the golden gong itself, whereas Uma Thurman and Zendaya wore their own takes on the white shirt and skirt combination.
One of the breakout style stars of the year, Anne Hathaway, took us on a real tour de force of trends with a kaleidoscope of colour and even a reference to her The Devil Wears Prada character Andy Sachs.
But it's not just the women raking in the style points at star-studded events this year, the men are at it too.
Michael B. Jordan’s canary yellow suit quite literally lit up the Black Panther 2 premiere red carpet, and Brad Pitt chose some bold looks at a series of events for his film, Bullet Train, over the summer, with his take on the vibrant coloured linen two-piece and a skirt suit.
Elsewhere, Timothée Chalamet’s tight relationship with designers was apparent once again at several events, from his backless red Haider Ackermann jumpsuit at the Venice Film Festival, to his take on the tuxedo at the 2022 Oscars: a sparkling Louis Vuitton jacket, sans shirt beneath, of course.
As the 2022 season is coming to a close, we take a look back at the best celebrity fashion looks of the year.
