Since making her debut in 2001’s The Princess Diaries star Anne Hathaway has gone onto become, undoubtedly, one of the most well-known actresses of our time, who can boast of accolades from an Oscar to a BAFTA.
She’s gone on to play in a variety of different roles and genres from Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises to Fantine in Les Misérables. Is there any role Anne can’t do?
Here, we’ve rounded up the best Anne Hathaway movies of all time…
The Princess Diaries
One of Anne’s first leading roles (and a firm favourite in our eyes). She plays socially-awkward teenager Mia Thermopolis who’s paid a random visit by her Grandma, only to find out she’s in fact the princess of Genovia (if only all Grandparent-meet-ups were like this…). Mia ends up taking ‘princess lessons’ to prove she is worthy of her title. It’s safe to say she’s the coolest princess we know.
The Devil Wears Prada
This film was a huge hit at the box office grossing over 300 million worldwide. When new graduate Andy Sachs (Hathaway) lands a role as co-assistant to a demanding Editor-in-Chief at a fashion magazine she realises what a cut-throat world the industry really is. In playing the game, she becomes the more ‘favourable’ assistant. But as work starts to take a strain on other areas in her life, how long is she willing to play?
Anne’s hard prep for this role paid off as she scooped up four different awards: an Oscar, Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild and a BAFTA. She gives an outstanding performance as the tragic heroine Fantine and her cover of ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ is goosebump-giving good. It even reached number 69 on the Billboard Hot 100.
It’s back to the world of fashion for Anne, but this time she’s the boss and owns an online fashion retail site. When she see’s her staff have taken on 70-year-old Ben as their newest senior intern (played by Robert Di Niro) at first she’s pretty sceptical. But in the end their relationship blossoms into the most heart-achingly sweet friendship.
The Dark Knight Rises
Another huge hit for Anne – the film grossed more than one billion worldwide and she bagged a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress. She heads to Gotham as Selina Kyle aka Catwoman to lend a helping hand to Batman. Anne definitely makes this role her own, with Vanity Fair even hailing her as the best Catwoman ever.
Anne and Matthew McConaughey make an excellent duo in this gripping sci-fi adventure. She plays a NASA astronaut and scientist who accompanies Joseph (played by McConaughey) to space, where the pair try to find a new home for humanity in the galaxy. But do they succeed? You’ll need to watch to find out.
Anne plays Josephine, a con artist, who’s seductive, beautiful and deceives rich men of their money. Penny (played by Rebel Wilson) is also a con artist, but cons not so rich men of their money. The two team up and prepare to take down the men who cross their paths.
In this action-comedy, Anne and Steve Carell team up as spy co-workers. Anne is Agent 99, the cool, smart and experienced spy who is paired up with Agent 86 (played by Carell), the intelligent, but not so experienced spy who she’s reluctant to work with. Together, the pair have to try and stop a terrorist attack and end up becoming a hilarious team in the process.
