From Town & Country

Wine-lovers keen to advance their sommelier skills from home need look no further: the newly launched Birley Wine Club is here to help.

Led by Annabel’s master sommelier Clement Robert, the club provides ways to experience and explore the world’s finest vineyards without stepping outside your door.

While the offering will eventually entail in-person wine-pairing dinners at the Mayfair members’ club, until lockdown restrictions are lifted, vinophiles can delve into a plethora of digital advice, online tastings and food pairings from a series of well-known experts.

The first edition of the Birley Wine Club’s digital series saw Alice Lascelles, the drinks columnist for the Financial Times, guide members through a tasting of a 2015 white Burgundy: Domaine François Carillon’s Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru ‘Les Champs Gains’.

The second follows Gaia Gaja of the celebrated Gaja family winery on a tour around her family’s Barbaresco vineyard, where she discusses their unusual decision to plant Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay grapes in the area, beside a river.

In the most recent episode, Tim Triptree, the international director of wine and spirits at Christie’s, greets viewers from inside Annabel’s and talks through his top 10 wine brands to invest in.
